Has anyone ever had any luck getting a discount code to work with a one-way rental with Hertz?
I recently moved all my car renting to Hertz. I like their Gold Club and Customer Service department. While not always perfect, Hertz has outperformed other companies overall. I would rather rent with Hertz, but the one-way rental (PIT-CLE) charge is much higher than the other companies, higher than I can justify on my expense report.
Any feedback, suggestions, or ideas would be appreciated.

Yes. Hertz has a good service and nice cars....but often very expensive ... and on many one-way-rentals most vouchers are not valid.
I have many one-way-rentals and often end up renting at National...friendly service and nice cars too (at Emerald Row).
Got nice National cars at: DEN, BOS, MIA, RSW, Naples/FL (no Emerald), Detroit ... and it didn't cost me an arm and leg ^
Just checked and booked YYC to YVR:
Hertz CA$ 900
National CA$ 500
Hertz did not except PC# 964902 ($20 off)

How high do they quote you? I recently got run over by a licensee who didn't want me to take their privately owned rental to another city, and when asking reservations how it works to drop in the wrong place, they said a lot of times they'll just switch your rate to whatever the daily rate is in the drop location. That sounds too imprecise and friendly to believe, especially because they don't have solid rules, but it's interesting to think that perhaps a single-location rental that decides midstream to drop in another place may be cheaper.
Personally though, I don't believe anything anyone says at Hertz. Try getting something in writing from them. They suck. They all have different views of their supposed policies, but really, it's just a disaster over there.
What do I know.

No.
Even with something that really isn't a one-way rental, like picking up in Manhattan and returning at LaGuardia.

I was able to use the code for $5/day off + 500 AA bonus miles on a weekend rental from SFO > SJC.

Ye olde CDP 706900 got me 20% off my SFO-PDX weekly rental, enough to keep me with Hertz vs someone else given my car possibililies for having to live with for so many miles (1400 as it turned out) over the week. Driving a crappy GM from National was a prospect I decided not to live with even though it might have been another 10% or so less plus saved me from going back to SFO. (I had the Mazda 6, which was fine by me, a week long test drive as I'm considering it a possibility for a new car sometime. Found it still appealing after living with it for a week.) I think that CDP gets less effective if you start trying to book classes above mid or maybe full size. Certainly didn't give good discounts on Prestige in my checking (AAA CDPs were better for that).
I tried a fair number of PC codes. Just forget it. The coupons don't work for one way. You just have to find the best CDP for the given place.

If you are traveling interstate - try reserving an 'A' on a one-way - you'll probably be upgraded to something nicer with your intended destination's plates on it. Unfortunately, you may end up with a Hyundai Accent!

I always reserve a compact for my one-ways. True, I did get a Ford Focus on pickup from Bradley, but I have been upgraded to a Mustang, Sable, and yesterday - a Taurus.

I just went with a mid-sized. It only ended up costing about $70 for the CLE-PIT rental (1 day)

I used to work for Hertz HLE and got a lot of off-airport business wanting one-ways from PDX - SEA or PDX - SFO If we had a WA or CA plated vehicle, it went first. You never know what is in the ready line. When we had one-ways, I'd send a hiker to pick up the nearest corresponding vehicle class to the one booked. If a customer wanted an A - We'd try to oblige and get an Accent; invariably a B or higher. Believe we tried to get someone into an Expedition once, but had to scrub that idea as they didn't want to pay for the gas. Also believe CDP should work on any rental.

Interesting. I was actually kinda surprised when I picked up my SFO-PDX one way that nothing at all happened with the car class. (I didn't initiate any discussion myself because it had already taken a good 10 minutes or more at the counter first thing that morning. I was the very first car out on that Saturday morning, heh.) Maybe it's because I had chosen the Mazda6 in particular (not just C-intermediate) which is or at least was possible at SFO. They didn't try to sub anything. I took a car with a California plate (and the Sirius radio that I didn't ask for or pay for). It did seem like there was something odd going on. The woman at the Gold counter (was my first gold, so I had to go in to the counter right off) was talking to someone on the phone who pulled a car saying "You pulled a California car" blah blah blah. The other guy got some kind of sign off from a manager to send this car. Someone at PDX will be looking to send it back I'm guessing.

I am planning a trip for my parents and wanted to know how I could get the best rate for a one way from JFK to BUF (17JUL-23JUL). I've tried some of the various codes on flytertalk, but have gotten a lot of errors. Thanks in advance for the help.

Again, CDPs only are going to work here. None of the coupon (PC#) codes seem to work for one-ways with Hertz. CDP# which are tied to various groups may still give notable discounts. Try the one I mentioned above, 706900. (No question was asked about the origin of this travel group CDP on my recent trip.) Otherwise you might want to try different company for one way. National was suggested as somewhere where some of the coupons work for one-ways and that doesn't quote a big drop fee.

Can someone explain to me how Hertz will call LGA-JFK (for instance) a one-way rental? All the NYC are co-terminals as far as the airlines are concerned, but Hertz says that they are separate locations, and considers such a rental a one-way? Doesn't that seem a little crazy? These cannot be franchised operations, no? Are all other car rental companies like this, too, or is this just a Hertz thing?
As far as getting coupon codes to work....I was successful in getting a one way rental from ROC-BUF for one weeks time, and secured the 3 WN bonus credits for the rental. YMMV, but it worked for me.

It's at least partially the same fleet too. Last month I had to wait a half hour at a midtown location for a Lincoln LS to come over from LGA.
You could probably get away with dropping the car off at either LGA or JFK without extra fees, but I'd ask first. Call the location directly too - not the 800 number. They'll know how it works.

I have always done well with one ways. just decide do you want the one way drop fee or the extra ten bucks or so per day fee added. I think Hertz is always high so the one ways are inline with weekday rental rates. Did Nashville to STL the other day for $80. Reguler rental in nashville is $50 a day.

I didn't get charged a fee, but it was difficult to use coupons and promotion codes. They were quite clear, when I called the Gold line that they were separate locations, not co-terminals, and it would be classified as a one-way rental.
My preference for NYC is to fly into JFK, as I find the LGA location inconvenient for me, but sometimes you just have to bite it to get a better flight time/price into/out of LGA. I usually fly AA, and they will sometimes have a flight that prices out better as MCO-JFK/LGA-MCO or vice versa. It would seem easy enough to consider these a co-terminal and not have a one-way rule, but it is NYC, people will go there anyway, and they are still going to rent cars no matter the silly rules.

I am going to bump this up because it looks like there is such a thing as a one-way discount code.
Here is something I found on another forum it is for a double upgrade on a One Way Rental. This looks like a scanned photo from the Entertainment book? Can anyone confirm?
I still have all 10 Hertz coupons from my 2005 Entertainment book. No sign of that one, but I can confirm that it is from an Entertainment book.
My coupons say Valid through June 30, 2006 on the back. Given that the ones from the photo say June 30, 2005, I think we can infer that they are from the 2004 book.
So I guess there was such a thing, true. Heck, that would have been valid for my trip, although I probably wouldn't have chosen to use it anyway. I wanted to keep a smallish car and from SFO got a type-specific rental for the Mazda 6 which was perfect. The coupon in that link requires renting that size or above and then getting an upgrade, which would have been too big of a car (barring some sort of grand stroke of luck in getting something interesting, which is somewhat less likely on a one-way).
Keep an eye out for the 2006 books which should be coming out fairly soon. Perhaps the one-way coupon will return.

CrazyOne,
Thank you for the code. I just applied it to a one-way rental picking up near Sacramento, CA and driving to SFO. For a full size I'm getting a rate of $54.90 w/unlimited miles. This is only for one day.
My question is, I am picking up the car at a Hertz Local Edition and the summary of my reservation says it is being discounted by 20%, but it also states that the final rate will be determined when I pick it up at the HLE counter. The discount is listed as Travel Partner Club. Any information on who they are? The likelihood of being asked to show some sort of affiliation for a discount when picking up at a HLE is much greater than when picking up at an airport location.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Yeah, I couldn't tell you either. I got the CDP from the helpful FTers here. My only pickup with it was SFO and maybe one at PIT (can't remember, I don't think I used it at PIT because the AAA with some coupon worked better). I have not been asked about ID for any of them.
Maybe someone else has used it at HLE and can share that experience.

Just wondering too, what the travel partners club is and if asked for a card, what the card would be from? Just so we don't look like idiots!

Has anybody else had serious trouble booking a one-way online?
I tried this a couple of months ago, and thought it was a fluke, but it happened to me again yesterday and it caused me to give up and rent elsewhere, it was so annoying.
When renting a one way, I check the "return to another location box" then input the drop location. Before I fill out the rest of my information, it unchecks the one-way box! I end up with what looks like a great rate quote, but when it confirms, it turns out to be for a two-way rental instead of the one-way I asked for.
I booked and cancelled two separate reservations before I figured out that it was unchecking that box with no input from me. The agent I called was surly and no help at all. I gave up, rented from another company and am paying for three days of airport parking--and it was STILL cheaper than the one-way rates Hertz wanted. :td:
The original rates were good, but I have trouble trusting the booking site for anything other than the simplest transaction after those experiences (one of which I didn't notice until a day before I was scheduled to leave, which could have really killed me as it was a European rental).

I just tried it and it worked fine. It helps if you "select' the originating city from the pop up. Did you call 800car-gold when you had the problem. They are always very responsive to me.

The few times I've gotten a one-way rental, I've had no problems getting my company's CDP to apply, but have seen it where others fail to work when tried. FWIW, my one-way rentals have been SGJ-JAX, TPA-GNV, and JAX-GNV--I think that's about it.

It seems to be a Mac problem. I tried it at a Windows computer and it didn't unselect.
I did call them. The rep couldn't have been less interested in what the problem was. She just wanted to quote me a rate, and when I asked if any other car classes haad lower rates available, she sighed like I'd asked her to personally deliver a car to my door. That, combined with the rate being so much higher, led me to book elsewhere. Even Avis was cheaper, which I don't usually find to be the case.

I've never had any luck getting it to work on one-ways or alternate drop offs in the same city.
