Planning a trip to China (Beijing, Xian and Shanghai) in April next year but will stay up till May 1st. I know this is a major holiday in China but will most locals be on holiday before or after Labour Day?

i believe labor day = national day which is in early october.

i forget what the purpose of the may holiday is.

anyway, imo traveling around china (or just staying put in bj or sh) is a major PITA during those vacation weeks. incidentally, the powers that be are considering, if not already in the process of implementing, plans to axe the current vacation system (where the entire country basically shuts down and takes to the roads, skies, rails 3 times a year).

all that said, if you leave on may 1, i think you'll avoid the brunt of the storm, so you needn't worry.

1 May is international worker's day. 1 October is national day.
