Starwood Preferred Guest - One Reservation Two Reservations

Anyone know what the official Starwood Policy is on making reservations for CONSECUTIVE nights under two DIFFERENT Rate Plans? i.e.
(1) One night Paid, Next Night Points -- Can this be on the SAME Reservation? Or TWO is required?
(2) One night Stay10, Next Night Points -- Can this be on the SAME Reservation? Or TWO is required?
I am asking because I have always been told that they should be on different reservations for "Accounting" reasons. But, I got a helpful reservation agent today who told me that generally they can put different rate plans for different nights under the same reservations -- making more than one reservations simply help some agents make their "numbers."

There could be systems limitations that caused this to have to be booked as two separate reservations. It is against company policy for a reservations associate to make two reservations where one would suffice. If you want me to check on it/report it then send me the reservation confirmation numbers.

Thanks for the offer William. :) But I just wanted to know what the official policy was. Now that I know, I will call agents on it when I am told something different.

No problem. Just bear in mind that when you are calling them on this that there may be a legitimate reason for their having to book two reservations. ;)
If you don't buy the reasoning, ask to speak to their supervisor about it.
