US Airways Dividend Miles (Pre-FlightFund Merger) - Partial refunds for cheaper re-booked tickets?

In the past I've regularly cancelled nonrefunable tickets on US and have had the tickets re-issued for other US flights, applying the value of the old ticket for the new ticket.

Given my vow never to fly US again, except on award tickets to use up my miles, I'd actually like to cancel the upcoming tickets I have on US and rebook them on UA. If the flights on UA are cheaper, will I get a refund for the difference (eg, if the old US ticket was for $500 and the new UA ticket is for $200, will I get a $300 refund, or do I have to just book new UA tickets worth $500 or lose the difference)?

Thanks.
