To make sure that FlyerTalkers can take advantage of "special" prices (e.g. 0$) that appear sometimes on various booking engines on the Net a list has been made. Posting of such great deals on FT have and will always lead to the quick termination of those offers since this board is monitored.
For reference please read: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum57/HTML/001751.html
Until June 10th 2001 FlyerTalkers who consider themselves fit to join may do so by submitting a brief (or verbose) email message to myself or Empress, who have agreed to master the selection process.
After June 10th membership is by invitation only.
It is (needless to say) necessary to prevent any unwanted elements from joining the list.
Have a nice day.

Great idea!!! Thanks!!! I wonder if there's a way to keep people informed of the lists's existence by putting a message on the Mileage Run board permanently - this is something that will grow in value by getting larger (assuming of course that the monitoring people continue to be excluded).

Goldlust and myself have developed a set of guidelines to which we use to determine whether you will be added to the list. We will not say what they are as those "monitors" will simply try their best to follow it before sending us their request.
We certainly try our best to make sure that everyone on the list initially is not someone monitoring the boards. However, it's up to all of the people on the list to keep it spy-free as we have no control on who the email will be forwarded to once we send it out.
Let's make this work guys! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Goldlust and Empress,
I really appreciate your efforts, but I'm not sure if this is a good idea.
First, we must avoid unwanted company, so the list will be very restricted. Since "paranoid" is the keyword, none of the 2001 registered members (hey, that's me http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif ) should be allowed. Also the person must have some FT background, history, "roots". Perhaps Evangelist should be a minimum requirement, or referal from a very small group of FT unanimities, like Rudi (to pick up my prefered FTer).
In any way, you see it will be a select and small group. Who will feed this group with the special prices, loopholes, etc? I don't think this people can go alone much further. See, for example, that the rate which originated this idea was the first and so far only post from brand new FTer TempeFlyer (Thanks TempeFlyer http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif ).
Perhaps FT will be the source? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/confused.gif
Ok, you may say people should be aware to not posting on FT, but send you the info. But hey, if a non-member send you a profitable tip, isn't he allowed to get into the list? And if it is a trap by some airline/hotel, willing to lose some money now to make friends and catch all future loopholes? Paranoid to the extreme level... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif
You may also say that airlines/hotels will catch anyway, but the list will make things a bit more difficult. I agree, but in this case a lot of FTers unware of the list will not profit from loopholes. And, IMO, this is against the nature of FT itself. Wish to listen from Randy and other old timers about it.
Note that my opinion doen't take the great merit from this community minded initiative.

I think you are all giving the airlines and hotels way too much credit. If they really cared so much, we would not have to complain so much on these boards, over and over. They would listen and act.
If you make this too restrictive, you will have a group that is not big enough to find and share ideas.

Well, I personally am a bit put off by the language in the offer - seems elitist to me at best - though I guess I don't understand the hisory behind this. I wonder if anyone else feels the same. I'm new to FT but the idea of trying to set up a private list only open to the chosen ones, well, that doesn't seem in keeping with the FT spirit. But what do I know, just a newbie! If others are happy who am I to rain on your parade.

Goldlust,
I was bored and decided to do a little counting. Of all the people who have responded with "Please sign me up" on this or the other thread in the Hilton board, I count about 25 "newer" FTers. These are people who have typically less than 50 posts and have been here less than three months or so. If I were paranoid about who I could or could not "trust", I'd be wondering about these people. So many seem like complete newcomers to FT and one of their first few posts is to ask to be put on a mailing list devoted to exploiting things like "fare and rate mistakes". There are others who registered on FT a long time ago, but have very few posts. Do you trust these people?
I believe you stated that the criteria for being added to the list were: interest, being a known FTer, and being trustworthy. Well, interest is the easy one. What do you define being a known or well known FTer as? What about trustworthy? I know you don't want to publish your exact selection criteria, but I think you're in a catch-22. Who are you going to trust? What are the people you reject going to think? There's always a danger of someone doing the emmissary thing.
Sorry, I have to agree with cactuspete... I'm not sure this is such a good idea.

But if you restrict it to members at least 90 days old, then I have to miss out for 90 days. If that's the guidelines, I can live with that. You're right though, catch-22 big time! I don't know what the answer is.

Maybe it's not such a good idea. As a new member, I've gotten some wonderful advice here, have tried to give back a little where I could (often hard to find anything worthwhile to add to a discussion, tho, with all these super-seasoned pro's here), have officially done a milage run, and bought my 'Official FF Guidebook' to support Randy and his efforts.
And maybe that's what bothers me. Secret email lists seem rather contrary to the spirit of this board and what Randy has tried to create here. I wonder if we will hear from him on this idea?

I'd love to be included on this list as well. I'm not a frequent poster but I read a lot of these groups and I find everyone's comments and stories very helpful. I'm sure I'm not alone in this regard. Goldlust, I understand if you'd like to restrict membership to those who you've gotten to "know" by virtue of frequent postings. It also seems fair that those people should be included first since they're obviously contributing the most. But I figured I'd ask anyway. Either way, I think it's a great idea, I wish you all the best, and I look forward to reading more interesting (and often amusing) posts!

I think a lot of the paranoia on the part of FT'ers re this list thing is from watching too many episodes of the X files http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif
Seriously, if the hotels or airlines are so dense and disorganized that they don't realize mistakes like posting $0 rates...
... what makes anyone think they would be smart enough to have someone read every post here to get their way onto a list so that they could read yet more emails ...
... especially when they could just use the same amount of effort to check their own rates on travelocity or some other service?!?
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/confused.gif
Makes MORE sense that there are a lot of people who work for hotels and airlines because they like to travel, and that those that DO read these boards are just looking for bargains for THEMSELVES.
My guess would be that the only way the hotels or airlines get any info from FT would be when one of their employees reads something here and then tells the wrong person about the great deals they found at work... but that's poor judgement, not spying. I think anyone putting the effort into reading this and prior threads and submitting their email has probably gotten the point that "mum" is the word.
Just my 2 cents.

Heck of an idea my fellow traveler. And until now the only thing I have used these boards for is to see that unwanted coupons have a good home. Well, glad to see I might get something in return. Please let me know what information you may require during the selection process. I am a UA 1K and a Starwood VIP. I don't travel any other airlines or stay in any other properties. Guess I've succumbed to the corporate travel game. See you in an airport soon!

Yeahbut, then they wouldn't be "known" and "trustworthy" FlyerTalkers. How else are they going to prove themselves "worthy" of membership on the secret list? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif This is an unmanageable problem, to put it mildly. Good luck to all of you.

I have had my email account flooded. All mails are still there but they are numerous!

As far as for people posting a note here saying that they have emailed me, I take that as a way of commending our work in public and thus it does have a function.

This is totally absurd. I agree with the minority opinion that airlines and hotels do not monitor this board enough to worry about it, much less go through all the trouble of trying to create a secret list.
Come on, don't you think that if airlines were actually that smart, they would find a way to get on your "secret" list?

Let me refrase what wrote above from "being considered" to "being processed" if that make critics any happier. I'll edit my post to reflect that. Done.
Although it seems pointless and needless to say: I have written several times that due to my limited knowledge of FT, Empress (a real old-timer) does the actual approving. I have sent invites to people that I know and/or trust but so can anyone who is on the list. Personal criticism of my person does not reflect on any decisions made by Empress (to my knowledge).
Another advantage of the list is that notification is instant and does not rely on people checking FlyerTalk often so there are in fact several reasons for the list. It is a valid point that the airlines may not monitor the boards at all (We know for a fact that they do, though) but then make that point and do not blur it out by making fun of me trying to do something good for everyone.
Jim67094: There are always people who do not appreciate other peoples work and have nothing but criticism and mean sarcasm to offer. I accept this as a fact of life, on The Net and elsewhere.
Myself and Empress are putting in hours of time and work on this list and most people like the idea. Though I try to ignore the cruel criticism also have feelings and I cannot see any possible justification for some of the critical posts.

I interpreted the new list as a refreshing opportunity for all of us to laugh at our admittedly somewhat distorted obsessions. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif
The real reason most of us like to hang out together is because we are the only people we know who don't think all this miles and points stuff is a little whacky. Funny though how those same people who are sure we are crazy, never turn down free tickets. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Seriously, set the group up at yahoogroups.com, and you don't have to do anything but approve the members. They can sign up with an address direct to yahoo groups, and you can maintain the list there. People send an e-mail to whatever address they come up with, you just go through and check approve for everybody you want on the list. This way you don't get any of it in your mailbox. If you are trying to do this manually, you will be overwhelmed (as you are now). Use one of the online services, like yahoogroups, to do most of the work for you. I use them for three lists, and with the exception of postings from hotmail being delayed for no reason from time to time, never had a problem with it. Best of all, it's free.

Flyertalk info is instantly available, though, except for those times when there are duplicates and you can tell the system has been acting up. I've had mail from many people delayed up to 2 days when various ISPs screw up.
Some people may like to be kept informed by email, others by reading online, others may just want occasional summaries. Nobody wants to be at the mercy of some home-concocted system. If you are serious about this, please do as cordelli suggested and just make it a yahoogroups or similar group, where everything's automated for you and you just approve things.

The reasons for setting the group up by private means are stated in my original post at the Hilton board.
(I have some lists at Yahoo Groups though)
Furthermore a list of this nature that requires intro-mails from all applications would hardly be easier at Yahoo Groups:
I would get an intro-mail from them anyway, and then I would have to log on to Yahoo and find them on the apply list and approve there .
Thanks for the suggestion though.

I didn't see the original post there.
However, I am on some private lists, and every time the person running it changes ISPs, there's a high risk of list disruption. Every time someone wants to change their email address, they have to send email to the correct address. (How many times have you seen "subscribe" or "unsubscribe" messages sent to actual lists, rather than the list maintainer?)
If someone's email stops working, they can still read their yahoo groups messages. If someone's email is running slowly, they can read their yahoo groups messages sooner than their email. Members in yahoogroups can reply to lists (assuming you are allowing any form of replies to the list, which you may not be??) from different email accounts, whereas most lists will only accept email from the recipient's registered email address.
Most importantly, if something happens to you, you can easily put other people into a moderating capacity on yahoo groups. That tends to be much harder on something you've set up yourself. (I speak as someone who "inherited" control of a yahoo group I'm in due to the original creator not having time to manage the group.)
Despite how yahoo have managed to mangle a few things since egroups ran it, there seem to be many advantages.

Count me in on the list. I wish FT was not open for public viewing as there are too many lurkers.
The idea of FT anyway is for the audience to be frequent flyers who wish to maximize their mileage accounts, not for lurkers. Let's not spoil a good thing. Until then, the list will keep those who can best use the information among those we can hopefully trust.

If FT were not for public viewing, you would not have been able to find it yourself, unless you were one of the founders.

Then I guess we are the founding forefathers. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif
Seriously, FT has grown to a good size. I think only those who register should have access. Access would still be free but not completely open. Other websites make you register. We should know who is visiting FT plus it would also help us overall with statistics- ie. we could say FT has 6 million UA mileage plus members or 240000 Hyatt Gold Passport members.

Hi,
I am a new member and really need some help on getting some extra points so that I can take my kids on vacation. Any help is greatly appreciated. Please include me on your list.

Why is it that quite a lot of folks who want on "the list" are either very new to FT and/or have a hotmail style email/no email?
I'm sure that if I were the webmaster of an airline site I would get my a** on the list before it gets kicked due to some pricing type...

How would you know about all "special prices"?
You may have to ask the members of this board to e-mail you all and every "great deals"
You have mail.
Oh no, I think you misunderstood. I am not the one sending info about this: everyone on the list can send alerts to everyone else on the list.

Not to ruin the fun of the "lurker conspiracy theory", but wouldn't make more sense to believe that the reason the special deals are gone shortly after they've been posted is that so many people take advantage that they run out of seats, rooms, coupons, etc?
Good luck to the offshoot group, but it sounds like much more trouble than its worth.

Actually what I find very funny is when people make negativ comments without any arguments. Any idiot can write, "I think XXXX sucks and is foolish." And so you do, it seems.

No argument necessary. The thing speaks for itself. Just one idiot's opinion.

Hi Goldlust. I am a new FT member. I have been reading for months but I never joined up since I travel almost exclusively for the government and thus up until a few days ago, my thousands of miles and points went unclaimed. Now, however, I am keen and eager to start. Please add me to your list. Thanks.

Hello
This is a final note on this thread to let everyone know that tommorrow is June 10th. As per my instructions after this date no requests to join the list mailed to either me or Empress will be processed. The easiest way to get on the list is to ask a FlyerTalker you know well to invite you.
Furthermore, I regret that this thread has become so long. This certainly was not my intention. Also, many who have mailed still have not received a reply - but you will! Please have patience!
I hope this will be the final post on this thread.
