Turbulence injures 15 people aboard Hong Kong-bound flight from Manila

Fifteen people on board a Hong Kong-bound Cathay Pacific flight from Manila were injured Friday when the jetliner ran into turbulence as the crew was serving meals, the government said Friday.

The injured included a 1-year-old boy, 11 women and three men, said government spokesman Shik Leung. All of them were in stable condition, he said.

Carolyn Leung, a Cathay spokeswoman, said one of the passengers suffered burns to the hand, while a crew member was cut on the head.

Of the 15 injured, seven were cabin crew members and eight were passengers. All of the crew members and six passengers were discharged after receiving treatment at local hospitals, Leung said.

Flight CX906 _ with 352 passengers and 15 cabin crew _ experienced unexpected turbulence about half an hour after takeoff. Most of the people were injured because meals were being served when the turbulence hit, Leung said.

Some passengers complained of feeling unwell after the Boeing 777-300 landed safely at Hong Kong's Chek Lap Kok airport, she said.

Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department spokesman Johnny Fung said they have asked Cathay to submit a report about the incident within four days.

There's something about the HKG-MNL run - I've experienced more moderate+ turbulence there than on all other routes combined...

Sympathies to the crew. I'd guess the 8 passengers weren't wearing their seatbelts...

And, some I know think I'm silly for having my seatbelt on.

sorry if I sound heartless, but if a passenger didn't learn to fasten their seatbelts after thrown up once, they deserved to get injured after the 2nd time...

This is why seatbelts shlould always be fastened. I always wear my seatbelt--albeit loosely. When I am sleeping the seatbelt I always fasten the seatbelt over the blanket/duvet. There have been many incidents like this and it amazes me how many people unfasten the seatbelt as soon as the 'Fasten Seatbelt sign" is switched off. When it is loose it not uncomfortable at all. I have never experienced this type of severe turbulance so I am not sure how protected I really am. I hope I never know the answer to that one. Cheers and safe travels to everybody.

I was on CX111 last night coming from HK to Sydney which flies right past the philipines. It was quite a bumpy ride down past the islands but that is fairly typical for flights which cross the equator this time of the year.

The funny thing was that at one point as we were getting down to the equator, we hit more rough air. I woke up and got the shock of my life to find the previously empty seat beside me was occupied by young girl of about 8 ~ 10 yrs sleeping away (without a seatbelt...).

Turns out, she had crept into the J section from Y and gone to sleep on one of the few empty seats and no-one noticed until the cabin crew came through to check we had our seatbelts on!! Never seen anyone get away with that before.

It's amazing the amount of passengers which ignore the seatbelt sign. Mostly are passengers in the Y cabin and you see them wandering around all the time. When the cabin staff tell them to sit down. They just wait for the cabin crew to walk away and then get up again. Tour groups from China are the worst offenders.

I feel sorry for the crew which got hurt on the flight but as for the passengers... well, as frequent flyers we don't pay attention to the safety video but we do keep our seatbelt fastened.
