I'm a first time traveler to Europe and am wondering if there are any power-related issues I need to consider for things like charging laptop, cam, camcorder at Florence's Excelsior and Venice ER. Thanks in advance for the help!

You'll need adaptors like you would need any other part of those cities.

I just came back from both of those fantastic hotels. At both hotels, there was one electrical outlet in the bathroom (with an electrical razor symbol next to it) where you could switch from 240 to 110. I recharged my digital camera and Ipod nightly with no problem.

I think that you might have been lucky, but I'm not an electrician, nor do I play one on tv, but....it is my understanding that the grounds on these are not adequate for most of the 110 electrical that we use. I've burned up a few adaptors in several hotels but thank goodness the circuitry in the adaptor burned up instead of my electrical equipment.

Just check the labels on your devices to make sure they can accept 240 volt 50 Hz current. If they check out OK, all you need is the plug adapter.

When I travel, I just ask the concierge/valet/housekeeping for a plug adapter for the US and have never had to carry my own. (Hasn't failed me yet at Luxury Collection, St Regis, and Westin properties.)

Enjoy Italy -- was in Rome (at the Excelsior) with my mum at Easter; quite an adventure.
