Starwood Preferred Guest - Making res for someone else

Hello, I've searched this Forum, but was not able to find anything.
My best friend is getting married and I was hoping to gift him points (make reservations and add his name to it) for his honeymoon in Greece. Given the fact that this is a very serious occasion, just wanted to check on how legal/illegal this is, and what is the probability of ramifications... if any.
Last fall I made a reservation for my two daughters (neither have my last name since they're married) in New York and they had no problem. Just call the res number and tell them what you're doing and make sure they note who will be checking in in the remarks section of the res. I also gifted a free night earned this spring to another daughter and there was no problem with that either. One side benefit to you is that any qualifying hotel charges will earn you SPG points!

Only if the hotel makes a mistake. ;) YMMV.

Iggyv, thank you for your comments. Just to confirm, the fact that qualified charges may be applied to my account is only if the hotel makes a mistake, but the fact that other people will be staying at the hotel using my points is OK.

You can gift an award reservation to anyone you wish. That is even written into the Terms and Conditions of Membership. Whether you get the incidentals from such a stay very much depends upon whether the hotel makes a mistake or not. ;)

I've done exactly what you're doing on several occasions. Make sure their name is added to the reservation in addition to yours, along with a note as to the circumstances and you should not have any problem.
