As a silver preferred or any other type of preferred can one standby without a fee? If not how is it upgrading on US metal while on a United ticket as a US Silver Preferred? Thanks and im sorry if this has been answered.

On a US ticket, there's a $25 fee that is sometimes waived.

On a UA ticket, there's not supposed to be a fee, but I've never done this with a UA ticket on a US flight.

Answered plenty of times, but one more time won't hurt. :)

Upgrading US metal on a UA ticket is day-of-departure requests only.

Standby on US tickets is a $25 fee. Standby on UA tickets is free.

Although experience shows there are sometimes exceptions to the rule. Most UA agents haven't collected a standby fee for my US ticket flights where I'm standing by for an earlier UA flight.

I don't usually try to go standby on US so I'm speaking from other people's experience here, but you may have better luck getting the $25 fee waived at the gate, rather than at the ticket counter. Use the boarding pass from your original flight to get through security.
