How hard is it to switch out cars once you arrive at the gold canopy? I have seen numerous posts here about people doing it, I just was wondering how much of a hard time they give you at the counter. I'm thinking that once I arrive there may be something else sitting there that I would rather drive...

Really depends on location and staff. When it is peak, they try to get you out of the lot as quickly as possible. Off peak, I had a guy run around the lot TWICE trying to get me a camry instead of a taurus.

I have yet to have a problem. Usually what I want is there, but on occasion I decide to upgrade or downgrade to better fit my needs.

Then tell them what they want. Usually works.

I usually switch out almost every week I fly into DFW. :D The Gold counter staff doesn't really seem to mind, and about 1/3 of the time they actually upgrade me into something nicer.

You can always call up Gold customer service and ask for certain cars to be noted as preferences in your profile -- that may help. ^

I'm doing that first thing in the morning-I can't believe how many times I read that about calling the gold desk to update my profile...and yet I put it off! I would love to try a Prius someday, maybe that will do the trick!

Thanks all for the words, sounds like it is a pretty easy thing to do.

Hertz bends over backwards to give you the car you want. It is one of their main benefits.

My latest experience with Hertz in Las Vegas. My car was in the spot next to the booth (ah, President's Circle). Didn't like it, went in and said I want an upgrade. Offered me two cars, I picked the Grand Marquis, printed the new contract, and walked a couple of aisles over to it waiting. Total time under 30 seconds.

Put it this way: The agents here at MKE KNOW I'm going to ask for something different: "What do you want to drive today, Mr. Scott?"
