Next week i am spending 4 days is Atlanta and I am looking for a short getaway from town on Saturday and Sunday.

What is the best place to visit within a range of 3 hours driving. Several suggestions appreciated!

Not sure what you're looking for but I'd drive north and head for the mountains, maybe Fontana lake in NC. Don't even think of leaving Friday night - wait for better traffic and travel conditions Saturday morning.

Having been born and raised in NE Georgia, I would definitely head for the mountains. Helen is a bit touristy but nonetheless, people flock to it. Brasstown Bald near Blairsville is the highest mountain in Georgia and has incredible views on a clear day. You could drive up to Lake Lanier Islands and rent a powerboat for the day.

Trout fishing in one of the many state parks in the mountains can be fun.

Highlands, NC is a beautiful spot.

There is a lot to do. Stop by the welcome center on I-985 North near Oakwood.

Highlands/NEGA is very good choice.

Slightly different is an interesting loop from the airport which might be an option as well, albeit with more driving (but you can skip driving through the city)

South from the airport there are several interesting sites--Warm Springs (where FDR stayed and died), Americus (Habitat for Humanity) Plains (Jimmy Carter) and Andersonville (Civil War Prison), and Callaway Gardens.

Slightly further is Tuskegee Institute and an exhibit on the Tuskegee Airmen at the airport just outside of town.

I live on the north Perimeter, and a long day trip is Americus/Plains/Andersonville.
