Hi all - long timer reader, first time poster - am hoping you all may have some good ideas.

Am visiting a friend in Shanghai next month and we're looking for a beach getaway. Goals are quick flight from Shanghai (which rules out lots of wonderful options like Thailand and Vietnam).

Research has uncovered Jeju (Cheju) in South Korea, but I have yet to know anyone who has visited.

The group traveling would be 4 30 something women, none of whom know Korean (although one is fluent in Chinese.) Goals are good beaches, some diving, and at least some kind of nightlife.

Any ideas as to whether this is a great or horrendous option for us?

Thanks very much!

Please contact the nearest Korean National Tourism Office ASAP and explain your situation. Koreans will most likely go out of their way to help you have an extraordinary ( in the positive sense ) experience on Jeju. Korea is one of those societies where couples tend to travel separately on leisure, so all destinations are very used to both female and male groups and take good care of them. It might be advisable to have a Korean guide for your group to make the trip and especially ordering local delicacies etc. more enjoyable and I'm sure that can be handled by the local KNTO office.

Jeju is a wonderful place, different from any other holiday island in the World and full of surprises. Just relax and bring an open mind and you'll have lasting memories of the place.

Nonstop flights from Beijing, Shanghai and Hongkong to Jeju.

Consider Thai beaches. They need the business and you will get a relative bargain, if you are up for slightly longer flights.
