Can anyone advise if we can pick up in Vienna and drop off in Rome and how best to handle this.

Thanks in advance.

I did it with Hertz Milan-Munich, expect very high one-way fees and it can only be done by calling Hertz Reservations. I was passed to some special desk for that.

FRA-AMS was 150 Euro fee
FRA-MXP was 350 Euro fee

Both in the past six months or so... but obviously, summer season could change this. I had no problems doing the rental online.

ps -- keep in mind that almost no car-coverages provided by credit cards, etc., cover Italy. So you may wish to take Hertz's CDW.

I paid more than 400... if you are *very* lucky in exchanges like ZRH-MXP you might get someone who reserved a one-way back and they waive the fee.

Thanks to everyone Hertz actually were very helpful and have arranged a 2 car deal so we drop off one and they will drive us to the next station in Italy and we pick up another car there which is about 15 minutes drive and they are OK with the car being kept within Italy

The above is incorrect. THEFT INSURANCE IS MANDATORY IN ITALY, CDW IS NOT. However, many car rental companies bundle CDW in with their rates and ask if you want to take out the Super CDW to bring your dedcutible further down.

Hertz does not bundle CDW in with their rates -- CDW and Super CDW are optional items -- presumably covered by a MC or Visa or perhaps a Diners Club credit card.

Perhaps I was unclear.

My point was that if you were relying on AMEX, for example, to cover the car in Italy (and thus declined CDW), you'd be in for a nasty surprise should something happen.

In other words, driving a car in Germany (renting on an AMEX), I would not take CDW, and AMEX would cover me.

The same for driving from FRA to AMS.

But had I paid for the FRA to MXP on an AMEX, I would have taken the CDW because AMEX excludes Italy from coverage.

Are, you sure that AMEX would not have covered you since your original renting location was FRA?

I have done something similar, but not exactly the same.

When I travel to Northern Italy -- or the rest if you have the time -- I have rented in Switzerland -- ZRH -- to be exact, and have declined the CDW.
As long as I am free to bring the car into Italy -- depends on the car class and rental company -- I was advised by the credit card issuer that I am covered because the original renting location was Switzerland. I had contracted for an Opel Omega, but was able to obtain a Saab that was not excluded for the trip into Italy. However, I always intended to return to ZRH to avoid the drop charge.

However, since the intinerary described above forsees a drop off in Italy, then perhaps there is wiggle room for AMEX to state that coverage will be denied - I just am not sure. I would contact AMEX to see whether or not they actually will cover CDW since the original renting location is not in Italy.

It's unclear. I'm not even sure where you'd get a clarification that I'd be willing to bet 30 grand on :)
