Does anyone know whether my AMEX Plat will cover me if I rent a car in Mexico? My personal auto insurance does not cover me in Mexico. Thus, the AMEX insurance will be my primary insurance.

From the website (http://www.americanexpress.com/platinum):

2. Underwritten by AMEX Assurance Company, Administrative Office, Green Bay, WI. You must decline the Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or similar option offered by the Commercial Car Rental Company. This coverage is EXCESS to your other sources of insurance. Coverage applies for the first 30 days of an auto rental if rented from a commercial car rental company. No coverage is provided for vehicles rented in Australia, Ireland, Italy, Israel, Jamaica, and New Zealand. Coverage is only available to permanent residents of the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Certain vehicles are not covered and other significant exclusions apply. Coverage is subject to the Terms, Conditions, and Exclusions of Policy AX0925. Call 1-800-338-1670 for more information and eligibility requirements.

I'd call the number and find out what the exclusions are.

You will still need to buy Mexican liability insurance. Amex may cover damage to the rental vehicle, but no US insurance policy covers liability when driving in Mexico.

In Mexico, you're guilty until proven innocent if you have an auto accident, so Mexican liability insurance is an absolute must.

Hi, I can confirm that AMEX won’t cover the car insurance when renting a car in México (at least platinum, don’t know with other card), so it is important for you to use PTS to find the best rate “including insurance”, it is very important to ask the “final rate” because insurance can cost you double basic rate and when you are at the airport and they inform you the “extras” you won’t be happy.. I have had experiences renting cars in Mexico and costs depends of destination.. you can also try the car rental companies web sites, when you select Mexico they will give you several options to add all kind of insurance covers, but again, PST must do that for you.. hope this help you not only to find out about the insurance but also to find a good deal.. :D

I just tried to find the policy "Amex Assurance Company- Policy AX0925" on-line.....if it's there, it's well hidden......That's after making a request to an agent at the number listed above to e-mail one to me a few days ago. Her original comment was "what's that?" after I quoted the Policy Number.....

All this because a friend just arrived here in Paris with a autoeurope-europcar 28 reservation with no insurance other than what's required by law here in France.....No CDW...PAI....etc. As US citizen/resident, she says she was told by Amex over the phone that her "basic green card would cover her"

I want to find and read the policy....calling the number and taking their advice may be like the blind leading the blind.....

Any advice appreciated!
