I will be traveling to MUC this winter for Christmas and want to rent a car for a couple days to drive to Garmish and surrounding areas. Has anyone rented one of these types of vehicles from Hertz and can you give me some idea as to what I might expect once I get there?

I am a PC member and wonder if I rented a Premium SUV (the volvo is the only one that comes up) will they try to put me into something else and what would that be? I will have 3 adults and two kids with me so I will need some room.

Any help would be greatful.

Thanks in advance.

Just a friendly bump.

Has anyone rented from Hertz in Munich that can give me some idea as to what to expect?

I rented a wagon from Hertz @ MUC about a year ago and received a Ford Mondeo wagon. Not the most luxurious car in the world but it certainly fit all my ski equipment etc and ran just fine. If you're looking for more luxury, I believe they rent MB E-Class wagons now -- One was parked next to my rental spot at MUC about a month ago.

For SUVs, I've had BMW and Land Rover Discovery at MUC. Wagons ran the gamut: Ford, Subaru, Opel, VW, BMW, etc.

When you reserve a car, you'll notice that it says, "X car type, or similar.". Frequently, I get the "or similar" and usually I'm not disappointed with the "similar" because it is an upgrade. YMMV.

I've reserved the E-Class wagon for my trip. I'm wondering will the BMW or Land Rover be large enough for 3 adults, 1 teen and one 7 year old? I want to understand what I should try for when I get there. I don't want to ask for something that may not fit what I need.

We will have luggage for all 5 of us but I would place some of it on top of the car/SUV if it had a rack and I had some way of covering it.

What do you experts think? Would it be wise to stay with the E-Class or try to get the SUV.

4 Weeks and counting.

I would recommend you to go for a Mercedes E-Class station wagon or a BMW 5-series Touring (their name of station wagon).
With upgrades on Special Cars (like SUVs are), they are very strict in Germany, giving them only out, when they're forced to due to the lack of a choice. All E-Classes or 5 series come with winter tires and a lot of electronic stuff to prevent you from leaving the road when you're not willing to :-) ! I'd recommend you to request an fun and economic diesel-car and see what we Germans (and Europeans in general) love about diesel cars :-) !
Enjoy your trip !

I second the Mercedes E-Class option - more room than a SUV and more luggage space too. They do come with winter tires, so snow should not be a problem. I'd recommend a diesel as well - no difference in performance, and the combination of lower prices for diesel and better mpg make this a significant cost advantage with the gas prices in Europe.

Well I'm glad I got the E-class reserved then. It sounds like this would be the best bet. Do you feel the back will also be big enough for all the bags or do I need to bring something to tie it to the roof racks?

Thanks again and I look forward to the trip.
