Just wanted to share my first time rental experiences with Hertz. I have rented quite a few times with Avis, and have always enjoyed their Avis Preferred service.
A few days ago, I signed up for the Hertz #1 Gold Club membership online. The $50 membership was waived because of my company affiliation. I signed up for a username and password through the hertz.com website, and made a reservation for today at the SJC airport for a sub-compact vehicle. Total cost: $24. Great for a 'one way' rental... dropoff at SFO.
Little did I know that I was not a #1 Gold member. They had me in their system as a #1 Club Express member. After talking to the Gold counter representatives, (they refused to do anything for me), I went to the main counter where there was a long long line (perhaps Memorial Day weekend).
Finally after a 20 minute wait, I got up the counter. The guy was quite nice, but I had observed, while standing in line, that he was offering the usual marketing spiel about insurance, fuel tank and all that. I wanted to get out of there asap, so I tried to be straight up with him. He asked about satellite radio, gas, etc, and I just told him "I just want a car, I don't need anything else." He processed my reservation quickly (much faster than the other customers who wanted to add drivers, use other coupons, etc) and gave me the keys.
I went to the parking lot and found a PT Cruiser! Definitely an upgrade from sub-compact.
Except for the #1 Gold Club mixup (I'm going to give them a call about that), I am quite satisfied with my rental!
