American Express Membership Rewards - Upgrading UK Gold to Plat

hi there

i've had a gold charge card for almost a year now, charging around £2K+/month and i'm looking to upgrade to plat at renewal next month, for the insurance, lounges...

problem is, everytime i call amex i get through to india (very frustrating btw) and they put me through to applications who say i need to reapply for an amex and i can only have it if i earn £30K.

i'm a 22 year old student whilst i probably have an income of £30K/year, it's from mummy and daddy - and this is apparently not good enough for amex, although it's good enough for me ;)

should i wait for a pre-approved invite or will this never come? any number i can call? customer retention?

You know that if you lie on a credit application in the UK, you're committing fraud, don't you?

You're not likely to get prosecuted, but it is much more probable you'll get a CIFAS warning on your credit file that will make it damn near impossible to get credit in the future.

oh i know - and last time i didn't lie - i was in employment, earning plenty enough to qualify for the gold card. its now i'm a student thats the problem...

I am 21 and also a student when I applied for the card (still technically a student although I am now self employed too). I have had the UK Plat charge card since Sept 04. I have had the Plat UK Credit Card since Sept 03.

When they asked how much I was earning I said I don't, I am given the money from my Dad. It is called "independent means" on their form. Don't click "student" one :p I confirmed this was over the £30k mark. When I had to sign the approval form thing, I called up to confirm they received the fax and the woman said we need your something or other tax form. I said "I don't pay tax, the money is given to me", she replies "oh, we don't give these to people that don't pay tax". I told the Amex rep "Oh really, so this Amex credit card I have, what's that?"....."oh sorry, I see....ok approved, card will be with you in 7-10 days"...

Easy :)

Getting Centurion, now that's a little harder. We'll see what Amex says when they re-open their invites ;)
