I heard something different from what the rep. told you.

Someone said that after about at least six months you can call to upgrade or do the Amex Express Approval, even with a Student Charge Card.

Student Green card is better than the standard no rewards green. It is on the same level as every other rewards green.
Im not sure about upgrading to gold. I would assume there is no problem provided you have the acct length and spending habbits.

You can upgrade to plat no problem , just pay 395 and your set. No need to wait 6 months I did it in 1 week. :p

The Platinum card carries no extra status or spending ability than the green card. It carries a few benefits that are only worthwhile to the traveller. And really only beneficial to someone who spends a lot on their travel.

If you go from green to gold or platinum, I would guess you have the same exposure limit and the only reason Amex might treat you a little better is because they're making more money off of you. They have more upsell opportunities.

For instance, I was on the phone the other day, asking about SPG bonus points for my SPG Amex and they asked me to sign up for Sign-and-Travel (which makes your Platinum Charge Card into a credit card, more or less) on my Platinum card. I was surprised they could cross sell like that.. but since I pay off my bill every month and they offered 3500 MR points, I couldn't refuse.
