Is there a way to 'opt out' of Membership Rewards? I really don't like the program all that much, but would like to keep the card. Thanks!
American Express Membership Rewards - Opt out of MR?View Full Version : Opt out of MR? TTT May 25, 05, 9:23 pm Is there a way to 'opt out' of Membership Rewards? The basic Green and Gold cards do not include Membership Rewards in the basic annual fee, so if it's one of those you should be able to cancel the MR option if you don't want it. Sounds like you just like the Green AmEx Card. Whenever you need frequent flyer rewards think: Starwood AmEx followed by Diners Club MC. ^ ahrz May 26, 05, 2:24 am I have an AMEX Green Rewards card. To lower your annual fee ? TTT May 26, 05, 4:03 am What is the point by "opting out" of MR ? To stop earning MR points on your purchases? To lower your annual fee ? Yes. Yes. Call AmEx Customer Service about opting out of MR, or what cards can opt out. Sounds like you just like the Green AmEx Card. Whenever you need frequent flyer rewards think: Starwood AmEx followed by Diners Club MC. I have the *wood Amex, and love it! Hadn't thought about the Diners Club though, may want to look into that. I will call and see what Amex says about MR. Thanks for your help! wahooflyer May 26, 05, 10:30 pm I have the Rewards Green as well and it's a different card than the regular Green, with Rewards. (confusing, I know. :) ) The Rewards Green includes membership in the "Membership Rewards Options" program, which requires twice the number of points to redeem for US/DL/CO frequent flyer miles. I only redeem my MR points for miles so I don't know what the other limitations on points are, if any. The plain old Green card does not include any rewards with the basic annual fee, but you can add Membership Rewards (the standard program, not Options) for an extra fee each year. You want the Green card without rewards. As both cards are "charge" cards (pay in full every month), you should be able to call and keep the same account, but just ask to switch to the regular Green. No need to reapply. singlemalt May 28, 05, 5:42 am The Rewards Green includes membership in the "Membership Rewards Options" program... The plain old Green card does not include any rewards with the basic annual fee... Am I missing something? Why would anyone want either card? Why would anyone pay an annual fee for either card? wahooflyer May 28, 05, 11:48 am Am I missing something? Why would anyone want either card? Why would anyone pay an annual fee for either card? There are better Amex cards out there, but the regular Green, for its annual fee, still provides rental car insurance, purchase protection, the ability to dispute charges, and other benefits. schutzdl Jun 2, 05, 5:52 pm Nobody has mentioned the Blue card with no annual fee and a free rewards program. Also, I got 0% interest on balances for 1 year. singlemalt Jun 3, 05, 9:57 pm There are better Amex cards out there, but the regular Green, for its annual fee, still provides rental car insurance, purchase protection, the ability to dispute charges, and other benefits. If I read the benefits correctly, the Starwood AMEX provides most of the benefits you've listed at a cheaper annual fee. Some of the "other benefits", like baggage insurance, in my opinion, don't warrant the fee for a no-reward card. For the record, I have a green MR card, which I will be dumping when my next renewal comes up - whether or not they offer me another 15K MR points to keep it. The new 5/3 bennnies on the HH Amex has made this card obsolete - at least to me. |
