View Full Version : Starwood AMEX "Platinum" question

I just got a Starwood Amex, and it says "Starwood Preferred Guest Platinum" on it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this "Platinum" does not refer to either platinum status in the SPG program or platinum as in "American Express Platinum". It seems kind of confusing, so I want to make sure I'm not missing anything.

You are not missing anything. :) The "Platinum" on the card is just the type of card and has nothing to do with the SPG status. This credit card does give you the "Preferred Plus" status with SPG, which is like the Gold except you donlt get the 50% bonus starpoint.

Also, the Platinum nature of the card is that of other Amex Optima products. What they are trying to convey is that it's a similar product to a Platinum Visa or MasterCard. This has nothing to do with the Amex Platinum charge card product (the one that costs $395 and has actual valuable benefits, such as airline lounge access).

I am about to apply for a Starwood AMEX, and want to know if there are special promotions for applying (i.e., bonus points, or special transfer bonuses from other cards). TIA... :-: :-:

I asked the same question in the Starwood Forum and received this reply from Zachary:

Always, always, go to pgary's website to check on these offers. Assuming you're not SPG Plat, here's an offer with 4,000 upfront points:

https://www66.americanexpress.com/c...D=EzI%2Ap8oPimU

All credit to pgary. Check it out at http://www.freefrequentflyermiles.com/index.htm

I applied and received card using the 4,000 point promo. Not sure when I'll get the points but...

pgary's site is very informative

There is a 10,000 point offer that will give you 6,000 Starpoints with your first purchase. Go to the Amex website and pull up the application. Leave the page and a pop-up will appear about the 10,000 mile promo and they will ask you if you want to be reminded of the offer via e-mail. You can either sign up then or ask that an e-mail be sent to you. They will send you the link for the 10,000 mile offer in the e-mail. Here's a copy of my e-mail:

I went to the amex site and see the Starwood card info but don't see the 10k breakdown that you see. My browser does not accept pop-ups either so I can't find what your seeing. Do you have a link you could post? The breakdown I'm getting is as follows:
Earn 4,000 Starpoints with your first purchase
Earn another 6,000 Starpoints when you stay at Starwood hotels and resorts

Hi,

Here's the link but it's a short application because I'm an Amex cardholder. Also, when you click on the link to learn more about the card, they post their standard offer of 6,000 points the first year....only 1,000 points with purchase.

Thanks for the link. I am already an AMEX Plat cardmember and am waiting for the Delta card to come in, so I can cancel my business management card and then I'll apply for the SPG card. That's the plan anyway. Too many cards, not enough miles. <grin>

I'm not getting the pop-up either. Has anyone gotten this recently? I would be very interested in a 6000 point first-use offer...

Thanks,
Michael

I'm not a Starwood Platinum Preffered Guest member and I got the 10,000 SPG point offer with 6,000 SPG points for the first purchase. FYI-The offer above for "everyone else" only offers 4,000 points.

I went in again and again got a pop-up for the same offer and an e-mail stating the same when I told them I wanted to be sent a link re: the application via e-mail. Maybe some have a pop-up blocker on their computer. I do too with AOL but this pop-up shows up. Maybe I'm getting the link because I'm already an Amex holder. I have no idea.

I normally use firefox but after reading your email I went in with IE and turned off the pop-up blocker, and in fact did get the 10k offer. I put in my email address "to fill out later at my convenience". I haven't gotten the email yet, but hopefully I will...if not I know how to get the offer again.

I have recently signed up for the Amex SPG card with 10,000 pts promo offer, again 4,000 pts comes with 1st purchase, and 6,000 pts for starwood hotel stay. And I thought 6,000pts is credited after a first stay, but after contacting their customer service, I was told 1,000 pts for 1st hotel stay and 500 for each further stay, totaling up to 6,000 pts within the 1st year, just wonder if that's how everyone else's work too. Thanks! ;)

2nd question, does anyone happen to stayed at the Four-Points in Vancouver Airport, Canada before? Would you recommend it?

I'm on the same boat with you; that is, the original offer did state the following in the fine print, "Receive 1,000 bonus Starpoints upon first use of the Card for payment of an eligible stay at a Starwood hotel or resort. Receive 500 bonus Starpoints for every additional eligible stay charged to the Card within the first 12 months of Cardmembership, up to a maximum of 10 stays (5,000 Starpoints)."

I think that language is uniform throughout all of thier offers.

IIRC, occasionally AMEX will offer 6k with 1st purchase. And up to 10k with stays etc.

When it happens, its always posted here on FT.
