Opening a SPG Amex and wondering if I can transfer my existing Gold MR points to it. If so, is there any reason not to do it? Posted in the Starwoods Forum but thought it would be more appropriate here.

When you say transferring to "it," do you mean transferring to SPG? When you earn points with the SPG card, you should get the points credited monthly to your SPG account.
You can transfer MR points to SPG at the rate 999 to 333. So if you're just getting SPG to convert the points to miles, probably not worth it if you want to get DL, CO, US miles (or other MR partners). If you want SPG points and have no other use for MR points, then do it.

Only other way I know of is waiting until they have the 50% bonus where 1,000 MR points will get you 500 Starpoints. If you don't need the points right away, it's worth the wait. But you can't cancel the AMEX card or you will lose all of those points.

Yes I mean transfer 150,000 or so MR Points to SPG and cancelling Gold MR Card. I didn't think about the cancelling and losing points. I also have a Blue Card that I use for low rate balance transfers only so i'm not sure if I close the Gold Card if I'd lose points or not since they're linked. I will wait until a better transfer promo comes up. How do I find something like this?
