Could i just trouble any frequent users of Hilton Properties in USA whether its ok for me to book a stay and then if i cannot make it during that date, do a modification without any penalty.
The rate i am booking is an Internet only rate but allows cancellations so long as you give the property 1 day notice...
any ideas anyone???

By "modify", I suspect you mean cancel? You may cancel a reservation online or by phone without incuring any penalty as long as you follow cancellation guidelines for your particular reservation.Read the cancellation policy carefully for the property you are staying at before you finalize your reservation as cancellation policies vary from property to property

what i meant was modify meaning changing dates......
As long as you make whatever change you want before the cancellation deadline you should be fine. Of course, the hotel may not agree to such changes. They might be full, the rate for the newly desired dates may be different, etc. In that case you could always cancel if you did it early enough.
You're generally better off calling the hotel directly in these cases as the reservation center people can't get too creative and the hotel staff has more leeway.
Yep - just cancel and re-reserve.

What I do varies - I have usually checked what a booking would cost if I were making the new reservation freely, and then changed (using the onlne "modify or cancel your reservation" option, I think it is called) my booking to make it easier to track booking numbers, etc. Occasionally, I can book the new reservation at a better rate - I will book anew, then cancel the old one.
Sometimes, it looks like it would cost more, I might call and ask for help - and make the changes with the same rate - sometimes, as I say.
