I have the option of LX or CX to travel from Hong Kong to Amsterdam in business. CX is direct but uses 34C aircracft (old seats). LX is via ZRH but on AB340 with new seats.

please advise :)

Please note that there are NO OLD seats on CX's Long Haul flights. All of them are equipped with the NBC (New Business Class) - 34C 744 and 74J and 333.

I noticed you asked for the skybed seat on QF to HKG. Please compare the 2 product. Althought the QF skybeds are slightly better I hope u do find CX's product to be better. Do you get QF points on LX? (is it a QF codeshare?)

My mistake. CX is using 34D on the HKG-AMS route. CX website states old seats on 34D. Is this not correct?

Yes - QF points will be accrued on LX flights but I don't think will count towards elite status. It doesn't bother me as a new year starts 1 June and I can't carry any over (for elite status, that is!).

I will compare QF/LX or QF/CX as the case might be!!

Oh sorry Forgot to add to my list. 34D is also NEW business class. the CX website is a bit MISLEADING, because when thye first introduced the NBC they had in on the 34C first before the 340. then they decide they don't want to operate 3 class for all long haul flights, they convert some 34C to 34D (just J and Y Class) But all of them have the new busines sclass and Cx didn't update the homepage correctly.

CX is much better than LX (and u don't have to transit in ZRH to AMS)
The seat on CX and LX is similar but CX is miles better in all other aspects!

R u using miles or $$$$? CX has better fares to Europe than QF.

Also how much are you paying for just the SYD-HKG return on QF J?

A bit of a long story - work is paying $$$$. Trip originates in AKL.

1. CX AKL-HKG-AMS and return NZD7600
2. QF/LX AKL-SYD-HKG on QF HKG-ZRH-AMS on LX and return NZD 7600

Not much difference in the travel time as with CX there is a longer stay in HKG. But, I get to stopover in OZ with QF/LX, which would have cost another NZD400 if on CX. The "old seats" misled me. Thanks for your help! ^

BTW, QF all the way on J is over NZD 12,000!!! The QF/LX choice is a QF ticket and I could upgrade to F with 25,000 points SYD-HKG. Might be nice!! ;)

Wow QF is discounting then! because on the SYD-LHR fare CX is definitely cheaper.

While the seat is similar on CX and LX it is definitely not the same. I had a shortish involuntary flight on LX in J (after my AY flight was cancelled) and found the LX seat to be quite uncomfortable (even for the c.90 minute trip between SIN and BKK). IMHO CX seats and service are considerably better than LX.

Well, having just flown LX from AMS-HKG, the sloping seats were indeed that .. I kept sliding down :( My recollection of the CX seats is that they were much better - almost like the skybeds on QF.

However, the entertainment system was fabulous with on demand movies that you could rewind / fast forward etc. I can't recall the CX system but definitely beats the QF system. ^

I don't want to say "told you so" but......

The CX IFE system is actually virtually identical to LX as far as I can remember, although I have a snaeking feeling that the LX system is a tad more user friendly (i.e. you could actually use the stop, pause, rewind keys to do just that). I might be imagining this last bit tho (I had quite a lot to drink in the BA lounge before my LX flight).

I flew LX last year HKG-ZRH-TLV and found the IFE system to be almost unusable. It kept hanging and the FAs had to reset it. Has it been improved since then. Didn't have any problems with the IFE on CX.

I only did the very short flight between SIN and BKK but it was working properly and was very usable although the short flight meant I missed the last 20 mins of my film :(

The CX system is really great and I enjoy the content a lot, the fact that all functions seem to need to be performed via the menu rather than having direct control from the IFE controller. I have been using the system on a number of flights recently but still find I periodically choose the wrong thing due to lack of user friendliness. Also if I have to watch the same crappy advertising at the front end of 7 or 8 tv programmes I think I will go insane.

I think CX has reduced the amount of commercials in the IFE. Also in J and F Class you can fast forward.

The irritationg commercials were on TV channels, and I tried to FF but was unable to, most recently in J just 2 weeks ago. So either I am being dense or missing something.

The problem wasn't the amount of ads, I only noticed one at the beginning of each tv show. The big problem was that it was the same ad each time.

Which one are you referring to? The inflight exercise ads or the ones that are in the Movies/TVshows etc??? You can fastforward the latter.
But just make sure you are quick otherwise you will eat into the show.

It was the stupid wedding commercial running at the start of tv shows. I tried to FF but the FF seemed to be inoperative until after this ad had passed.
