Fairmont President's Club - Fairmont Suite Certificate - Which level of suite?

I am planning on using a Suite - Upgrade certificate in a few weeks, and I was wondering -- does the upgrade entitle me to any suite, the lowest level of suite, or is it a "best available at check-in" situation?

Any ideas?

I believe that officially it's the lowest level suite (including Junior Suites, which, IMHO, aren't really suites), but if you're Premier or Platinum you'll have a pretty decent chance of getting an upgrade from there.

I am premier, I will call ahead and try my luck.

As a Platinum I rarely end up in the base Suite. At Lake Louise I have been booked into a Lakeview Jr. Suite already as opposed to a Mtn. view and who knows what I'll actually end up in :)

Officially it is to a Jr. Suite and usually the lowest level in that category. Frankly at certain properties the Room UG to Gold Floor is better but these are limited in number as they need to have just a Fairmont or maybe also a Deluxe category room to make it cost effective. Some hotels like the Waterfront have MANY room categories below Gold so you have to buy your way up the chain quite a bit while the Palliser has just Fairmont rooms ;)

eastcoastcan, what hotel is this for?

I should have mentioned that, it's for the Turnberry Isle Resort.

I am planning on using a Suite certificate, I called the concierge earlier and he said he would put in my request for a Jasmine suite, considering it's our honeymoon, they might decide to give us something even nicer.

I've used a suite upgrade there -- they have no junior suites, and, from what I can tell, all the suites are very nice. I think you'll be happy with whatever you get.

Correct .. reading the upgrade NOTES you must call the concierge. They will reserve it at the time of booking (if you have those coupons). I agree that Plat will get even a better upgrade (they seem to plan ahead every day for check-ins) .. I have had a HUGE HUGE suite at the Fairmont Royal York many trips.. with fake fireplace and vaulted ceiling!

Interestingly enough I had booked a $460CAD Signature room at Vacouver Waterfront hotel . then called for my Suite Upgrade. DONE... harbour view and all .. and 'oh yes sir I have lowered your rate to $320CAD and you will be guaranteed the suite'.

FABULOUS!!

Same phone call to concierge. I needed to add the Suite coupon onto an August stay in London at the Savoy. Fine.. but at the same time I asked to insure that there would be TWO beds in the upgrade as I am traveling with a friend. 'Oh .. the upgrade only has one bed .. but hold on (can tell she is calling London) .. sir I have you confirmed upgraded to a bigger suite that does have two beds ... enjoy'.

SUPER FABULOUS!

I am very pleased with Fairmont!

I've been lucky lately, and have been regularly upgraded to what must have been the "best available" suites. For example, check out my photos of the suite I was upgraded to at the Fairmont Empress earlier this Spring (I was using a "free night" coupon as well):

Just got back from a fab stay at the Waterfront. Since my Suite was not available at 11 am I asked if anything was available, perhaps a gold floor room? On an exception basis they allowed me to stay on the gold floor in a corner harbourview room - very nice! And a nice lounge too. Concierges are above and beyond, especially Matthew who I think must know everything there is to know about Vancouver! After my run around Stanley Park I was offered bottled water by the doorman as well as a towel - now that's service ^

Fairmont has been a great chain to stay at. I have never come accross "Gold Floor"s however,. which hotels have them? How nice is the lounge? If I know to ask sometimes, it would be worth the effort.

Most Fairmonts will have a Gold Floor .. with private checkin and private lounge. They call it a hotel within a hotel.

Upgrades (comp or coupon) almost never are moved to Gold as a matter of principal. They seem to prefer to give you a bloody huge suite rather than gold! :)

Gold can be reserved. It may be $50 or $75 a night more. Not sure if you book a Gold room AND have a suite upgrdade what they will do....

What does it get your? Free breakfast, free evening snacks and an honour bar (usually free pour). The room amenities are always upgraded and the room itself may be larger (depends on hotel) but certainly more luxurious.

I stayed at the Hamilton Princess (Bermuda) for MONTHS .. and never got Gold. Eventually they kept my favorite executive suite for me .. since I was there most every week. My big boss always got Gold .. not sure if she paid for it .. or it was part of a negotiated rate system.

In any case, Gold is WONDERFUL .. but to me .. Fairmont in general is FABULOUS so its hard to step up from there!

There are currently 21 Fairmonts that offer the Gold Floor option. A list can be found at www.fairmont.com/fairmontgold - that page also summarizes amenities and services.

One other question on this topic. Do the suites come with breakfast or any additional food amenities? I would assume they come with a cheese plate or something similar in the evening and breakfast in the morning?

Sorry, you assume incorrectly. Generally Suites are just the room....well, its really never just a room of course but there is no food included unless of course you have a Suite on the Gold Floor but those cannot be booked using upgrades (maybe from a regular Gold Floor room?)

Officially, a suite upgrade cannot be used to get a Gold suite even if you pay for a regular Gold room (this is what I have been told by the Club.) However, Fairmont is generally very customer friendly and a friend of mine found out that by calling the hotel directly (in this case the Chateau Frontenac) the reservation clerk was more than happy to upgrade him to the one and only Gold level suite. I should point out that it was off-season and the hotel appeared to be half-empty.

I'm disappointed to read that Fairmont considers a "junior suite" to be a suite. A suite, by tradition, is only a suite if there is a door or two between the parlour and the bedroom. Anything less is a swindle. I have had junior suites several times at Le Reine Elizabeth in Montreal (often on complimentary upgrades) and these are genuine suites which even have a second bathroom in the lounge half. This can be confusing, because the term junior suite normally implies a large room and not a real suite.

It seems to me that many of the Fairmont Gold sections have only one suite. In many cases it can be cheaper to book a suite than to book two regular rooms. This can be a very good deal as long as there is a bed chesterfield in the parlour section and one person or couple doesn't mind sleeping on that.

I have booked a gold floor room at the Royal York in September. Would we go directly to the gold floor or proceed to the FPC Counter then go to the gold floor?
What can I expect at the Royal York (Gold Floor)?
Cheers
