American Express Membership Rewards - Info on Premium Car Rental Insurance?

Received a card from AE offering "Premium Car Rental Insurance" for either $19.95 ($75,000 ins.) or $24.95 ($100,000 ins.) Coverage is for 1 to 42 days for the one fee. Payes as primary, instead of secondary to your own insurance and only covers the rental car. Anybody have or used it before??

I haven't used it, but I suppose that it's a good deal if you want to avoid filing a claim with your own insurance carrier. Especially on a lengthier rental, it's a good deal.

I'm surprised that it doesn't cover any other cars involved in an accident though - that would defeat the purpose of not having to claim through your own insurance.

Does Delta's Platinum AMEX offer basic car rental insurance? or do I need to get this?

Amex insurance is secondary so that is the biggest difference - there is auto coverage but with premium there won't be anything with the holder's primary auto insurance at all - obviously never a need to buy any CDWs or the like

So the Delta AMEX doesn't really provide much rental car insurance? When you say secondary, I assume that only comes into play if its not covered by your regular car insurance?

Call them and verify; different AMEX cards offer different levels of coverage. As an example, I have the Delta Gold AmEx--if I refuse all insurance offered by the rental car company, AmEx covers the CDW, but not the liability [you need both]. So I called my car insurance company, and they said my liability travels with me even in rental cars, but the CDW does not, so I was covered without buying any more (so long as I did not accept the rental company's insurance). If I had purchased the insurance from the rental company, the AmEx insurance BECOMES secondary (this is just AmEx's way of making the rental company pay first if there is an accident). The short of it is, if you want to rely on it, call and ask very specifically (and ask them to email or mail you a copy of the full insurance policy, which they will do). It was helpful to me--but of course I didn't get in an accident so had no way to test it! The Wall Street Journal had a good article on this a couple months ago--their website requires a subscription, but if you have it it's worth a search.

Call AmEx and have them e-mail you a copy of your insurance policy so you can read the fine print yourself.

Plat Delta, seems to be per rental, it's news to me too!
