Some of the hotels (like the Taj) offer room packages that include airport transfers for maybe US$10 over the regular room rate. I opted for this on my first visit to Colombo because I was arriving at 2 AM and they had a driver waiting for me. Whenever I have arrived there I have always seen plenty of taxis (even at 2 AM), so I don't think you will have a problem. In the middle of the night it takes maybe 25 - 35 minutes into town, perhaps 45 - 55 minutes in daytime. serfty May 12, 05, 7:21 pm Some of the hotels (like the Taj) offer room packages that include airport transfers for maybe US$10 over the regular room rate. I never actually used a taxi to or from the airport (used the Taj hotel transfer the first time and afterwards the private driver of some friends living in Colombo picked us up and dropped us off), but from other prevailing prices, I would say that the USD 10 rate sounds pretty accurate. I would negotiate the price before entering the taxi just to make sure there is no misunderstanding later. wandering_fred May 13, 05, 8:27 am Thanks for that dogcanyon; do you know how much the Taxis generally cost? --- This page from the CX web site (http://www.cathaypacific.com/uk/airport/worldwide/0,,64147,00.html) indicates taxi's are generally about LKR1,000 or USD10. Well I think 1000 LKR would be very optimistic unless you spoke fluent Sinhalese :D 2000LKR is probably what you will pay unless you can get a "meter" taxi where they multiply the odometer by a fixed rate.... Last week I managed to get one of those from Colombo to Negombo (10km past the airport) with the base fare 1600LKR. We were there 4 days. My wife found the traffic disconcerting  We lived in the middle east and whe in Iran before that so make your own deductions. Post more questions (private message might also be a good idea as well as this is not one of my normal groups to read) and I'll try to answer Downsides: humidity Upsides: great people low cost WF |
