JetBlue TrueBlue - Did Jetblue consider picking up LGB-MEX route?

Delta dropped it's LAX-MEX route:

Alaska picked it up:

American wanted it:

I'm wondering if JetBlue considered trying to get it.

If they're going to ever try to enter the Mexican market this was a good opportunity. I doubt it would be cost effective in the short run were they'ed be servicing:

LGB with connections to OAK, SLC, and LAS

But if they ever develop the west coast it could be a killer.

I'm not sure if the ageement between Mexico and the U.S. DOT that allows for each country to have two companies each fly LAX-MEX would be able to get extended to LGB.

It would be interesting to know how the negotiations take place, but either way I'm still waiting for B6 to enter the Canadian and Mexican markets ^

I really don't see myself ever flying to LGB to catch a flight to MEX since Aeromexico/Delta has nonstops there from SLC. And in LAX Delta has the same codeshare arrangement with Aeromexico that they do in SLC.

The way the agreement between the US and Mexico works is like this:

-Only two US carriers can fly any US-Mexico route.
-Only two Mexican carriers can fly any US-Mexico route.

That is it. There are no other restrictions.

Since there are zero US airlines flying Long Beach-Mexico City, jetBlue can apply for it, and they will get it. However, LGB is a domestic airport and cannot handle any international flights (even pre-cleared Canada flights), so no dice.

That is very interesting, why indeed can't LGB handle pre-cleared Canada flights?

It is simply not a designated international airport.

Neither is Orange County. In 2002, Alaska Airlines announced Orange County-Vancouver, and it was not until the first flight left Vancouver that they discovered they can't fly the route. The flight was diverted to Ontario and the route canceled the next data.

How could they not know about this? Is this some sort of new 'security' feature?

Um, it's Alaska... :) No, to my knowledge it's not a new security feature, it's just that you can't fly international flights to/from non-international airports.

What does it take to be on this list? Seems to be a lot of northeast/midwest airports with service to canada (dayton, etc.) Why not socal?

Not to be to technical but Dayton doesn't have non-stop service to Canada. It used to.
