Hi all y'all, and first of all; thanks for any help you can offer! My in-laws are considering travelling to BKK for plastic surgery at the Bumrumgrad Hospital. They are inexperienced travellers and wish for my help in getting them good information.
They are considering staying at the Rembrandt Hotel there. Have any of you used this hotel? What are the accomodations like?
Have any of you taken advantage of plastic surgery at the Bumrumgrad Hospital in BKK? Were your experiences good?
If you wish to e-mail me personally, instead of posting here; feel free to do so w/ the above subject in the subject area.
They will leave from MSY and will probably take either UA, DL, AA, or, JAL to BKK. Which one of these airlines would any of you prefer, due to comfort, etc.
Once again,
Thanks for your help!

Only UA and JL fly on their own metal to BKK (so does NW and a few others you haven't listed).

Regarding the Rembrandt Hotel...
As far as I can tell, most FTers just go three to eat at the Rang Mahal Indian restaurant. It's definately not 5*, maybe 4* or just under.
Odds are pretty good that they could priceline something nicer in the same area like the Westin or Sheraton Grande for around $75. For that matter if they are willing to $125-$135 a night they could book directly at the hotels.
Not sure what they are haveing done, but they are likely saving $1000s of dollars. Why not splurge a bit on the hotel room?
Good luck.

As far as Bumrungrad Hospital, I have not had any plastic surgery there but I did have an emergency (pesky little heart deal) while in BKK last year and it was a great hospital. My wife is from Bangkok and she says it is considered one of the best and I try to schedule elective things there when I can primarily because of cost but also because of service. I think you will find they are very nice and service oriented. There is a Starbucks and Mcdonalds in the hospital and a couple of restaurants have delivery to the room and are extremely reasonable. I dont know if they are staying overnight at all for the surgery but they wont want to eat the food included with the room.
As far as hotel, I am not familiar with the Rembrandt but the Westin and Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit are good choices and the Marriott is a little closer on Sukhumvit Road. The nice thing about all of those hotels is that they are all close to the skytrain (cant remember how close the marriott is to the station though) and you can just take a quick taxi to the hospital which I have actually walked from the station to the hospital but my wife doesnt like to. The traffic on Sukhumvit Road is horrible at most times so taking a taxi to and from the hospital can be a very long short trip at times. I always stay at the Westin but any of those hotels will be fine for them.
Flights, personally I think if they can get Economy plus on UA then they will be happiest as they will have more room. DL I am assuming you are talking about using them with the codesahre and taking KE? My wifes friend took KE to BKK and wasnt very pleased but their forum may offer up more detailed info on that route. The KE route should be cheapest. JL would most likely be Jalways and they are basically no frills so probably minimal service. I fly United so guess who I would suggest but honestly they are all probably about the same in Y unless you can get E+ on UA. If it was me in normal Y seats it would be UA or NW with JL in a close 3rd. The only think I dont like about NW is the 6am departure from BKK.
Hope they have a good trip and I am sure they will be happy with the hospital.

Deat TxSkyGal,
Great choice for Plastic Surg @ Bumrungrad. I'm an RN with 25 years exp in the US and I can tell you this Hospital is top-notch. Been there as a pt and had family and friends stay there and it was a great experience. Very clean and modern and the nursing staff was second to none.
About a place to stay, The Rembrandt is a nice hotel but it is a little far from the hospital. Why not stay on the hospital grounds in their serviced apartments? These units are clean and safe and right next door. Check thier website under BH Residence. Prices start at about $25-$30 US per night.
As for airline, remember you posted on Flyertalk, so go fro the miles. If you are flying out of Texas I have flown Continetal from Houston to Narita and then NW to BKK. Just pick which FF program works best for you and credit all miles to one account.
You can e-mail me if you have any ?

Not easy to get in and out.
JW Marriott is still a walking distance from the hotel but you might check the residence of the hospital first. It's cheaper comparing to any hotels. If you still want to stay in a hotel, Marriott is the most convenient to the hospital.
Good luck :D

Here's a possibility of your family getting to BKK in comfort for relatively little.
NW has offered a WBC sale for the last 3 years to BKK. I've paid between $1,500-1,800 for SEA/YVR-BKK r/t. Season is usually 25 Dec.-1 Jan. departure with min. 7 day stay. Max. stay has varied but was 30 days last year.
NW also offered a fare last year, slightly more than what I quoted above, for travel early/mid Nov. to X'mas which was offered from around last Sept. onward. Note that these fares are only available online and aren't often publicised. Look for Z fares.

^ Thanks so much to everyone for their expert advice. That's why I ALWAYS come to FlyerTalk; when I need the best advice!
Please feel free to add information, as you think of it. Terenz, please tell me what the WBC sale is. Sorry, I'm clueless on that point.
Thanks to everyone here!!!

Keep an eye out through orbitz or travelocity fare lister. You're looking for a Z fare. Look at UA too.

"60 Minutes" did a story on Bumrungrad recently (it was a positive story about the foreigners who travel there for great treatment at significant cost savings). They usually keep their stories on the net for long period of time. You might want to look for it if your parents didn't already see it.

My Uncle was air-evacuated from Vietnam to Bumrungrad due to a heart issue. He couldn't say enough good things about the place. Extremely service oriented, clean and modern. His doctors back in Australia remarked on the thoroughness of his care there.

Echo the stories of super facilities and care at Bunrungrad.
If you have to get sick do it in the Sumkumvit area of BKK.
Stayed in the Rembrandt in 1997. Soi 24 is too far away.
The Landmark (almost Soi 4) should be comparable and is walking distance of BH (in good weather). Cab fare about 40 baht ($US1). If fancy waiters and hand-held service is not a major requirement there are plenty of 3* hotels between Soi 4 and Soi 15.
We stay at the Manhattan on Soi 15. The rooms are clean but basic. Beds are fine. Breakfast buffet is OK. Carpets a bit outdated. Staff are friendly. About $US30/night by internet. The new wing (not the old) of the Ambassador would be a step up. There are some other reasonable ones but I consider them too close to the Nana Plaza. Search google for an explanation of that reference...... if you need to....
Happy wandering

If you are not able to get the Business class discount mentioned on NW or UA, the next best thing for me would be EVA in their Economy Deluxe class, for the transpacific. Connecting flights are booked on several airlines and they give full mileage credit to CO One Pass.
For the hotel, the Landmark is a good choice, and if the thought of crossing a busy road is difficult, I've had good success with the Amari Boulevard, a good 3 1/2 star at least and decently priced.

There was a follow-up article on the "60 Minutes" story in today's 'The Nation' (http://www.nationmultimedia.com/2005/05/16/national/index.php?news=national_17373536.html).
BUMRUNGRAD INTERNATIONAL: ‘60 Minutes’ appearance triggers flood of interest
Published on May 16, 2005
Hospital receives thousands of e-mails from would-be patients within days of US news show’s profile
In the first two days after it was featured on the “60 Minutes” news programme in the United States last month, Bumrungrad International received more than 3,000 e-mails from prospective clients.
Among them, 300 people have confirmed they will come to the Bangkok hospital for surgery, said Curtis Schroeder, the hospital’s chief executive.
“Three thousand Americans figured out how to spell Bumrungrad, how to find the website and get through,” he said.
A segment dubbed “Medical Tourists”, on CBS’s “60 Minutes” April 24 programme, told the story of two patients from the US who had come to Bumrungrad for medical treatment.
The two Americans are among thousands of international patients who visit the hospital for a number of services, ranging from complex bypass surgery to eye lifts, at prices that are one-eighth to one-tenth of what they would cost in the United States.
I have been an recent out-patient (upper respiratory tract infection, one of the most common ailments for foreigners on extended stays in Thailand according to my doctor) at Bumrungrad and can say that it is equal to or better than facilities I am familiar with in the U.S.A. The fee for the doctor was 500 THB. The entire process, from when you enter the door to when you leave, is very smoothly orchestrated. You are personally escorted from station to station throughout your visit.

I echo your experience even though we went to a different hospital, BNH ( Bangkok Nursing Hospital ). A minor case of what you said: sinus infection, probably triggered by allergy to smog and various flowers.
BNH is an excellent facility with a great medical care. From the moment we entered the door to the moment we left with a bag filled with prescriptions in our hands, all it took is half an hour. The doctor charged us about $10 and the name-brand drugs were a fraction of the US price.
As strange as it is, our visit to BNH was one of the sweetest memories of our vacation in Bangkok.

Friend of mine spent a month at the Bumrumgrad after he was caught in the Tsunami in Khao Lhak. Had 3 surgeries and spent a few days at the ICU. He said it was outstanding, and the whole thing cost him about 10,000 USD. Imagine the cost of that in the US...
