The "Consummate Consumer" appears to be attempting to rag on credit card car rental insurance. I read it to say that if you don't follow the instructions in the terms and conditions of your credit card for reporting an incident, you may be SOL. One call to the credit card company immediately after the theft and it likely would have been all over the situation, especially getting the statement from the manager in writing.

While Yuri and Irina Khidekel were relaxing on a Maui beach in March 2003, a thief drove off in their rental car. Inside were their IDs, cell phones, cash and clothing -- all seemingly more troubling losses than the car, which was insured under their credit card's automatic car-rental policy.

(Apologies if previously posted. I did skim and search Newstand with no hits. But I didn't search the 4-5 other forums it could have ended up in.)
