Maybe I'm slow or haven't noticed, but they changed the First Class Snack Mix. Had it yesterday from LAX-PHX.

Same bag but slightly different insides.

Not only was there more mix, but it was more like an assorment served at a bar.

Has anyone else had this new meal option? What do you think?

Washed it down with an Arizona Iced Tea (that is no longer listed on the menu in the magazine) I kind of liked it. :)

Do you mean their "gold mix" pacakge is bigger? I like that gold mix actually.

Hey, any of you remember about a few months ago HP was handing out (on non meal F flights) those energy or power bars? I remember getting them on a phx-dfw flight back in December but they seemed to have since vanished. They were good.

I experienced the new mix Thursday on the flight back from MSP to PHX. I have to say I don't like it near as well as the old mix. On my flight back last night to MSP we were first given the old mix then subsequent bags were the new mix. The bag does seem more full but I'm not a fan. Thankfully I'll stop eating so much of it :) Now if we could just get them to change the chicken/shrimp ceaser salad/pasta for something else (something else better that is) I would be happier :)

That was my favorite part of the HP F experience... :(

now I'm depressed.

So they screwed up the Gold Mix? Damm! To be honest though, HP has no control over this. King Nut is the company that makes the mix packets.

Why do companies feel the need to screw with good products.

Did the bag still say Gold Mix?
Seems to me I remember having this bar-type mix that you speak of years ago, then switched to the one with the cranberries.
I've been in YC this month, so I haven't notived.
I will be on the look out this week!

Maybe they're just gonna rotate, like they do in YC w/the salted, honey roast, pretzels?

has anybody also noticed the change on their website to the F catering. for am flights, it shows the waffle now becoming an omelet, and the pm flights change from a ziti pasta to lasagna. has anybody had these yet

Yep, same bag. BTW, those were not craberries, they were dried cherries. At least that is what it said on the bag. I don't like the new stuff at all. Those cheese stick things are horrible. I liked the old stuff.

The old mix had 7 gms of fat per bag. I wonder what the new "supersise me" bag has. Guess I'll find out in about 3 hours.

Had it today on a phx-iah flight. Major thumbs down. No more nuts, and especially, the dried cherries are no more. Cheap a$$ HP!

Those finger fried dealios in the mix are crap. I know it boils down to cost. This crap mix has to be much cheaper than the prior mix offered.

Thanks Doug :(

I didn't really think it was an HP thing. I figured King Nut changed it up. If it was HP that did it for whatever reason it sucks...but if it was the supplier then HP may have no control over it and the supplier might just change it up once a year. I've only had a couple packages of the new stuff but I still found some almonds in there but not sure about the other nuts that were in there. But those yellow sticks suck and they get all over your fingers :)

What's your worst imaginable HP nightmare?

No more free upgrades?
No more first class, period?
No more airline, perhaps?

The one that has become reality is worse than any of those.

They changed the snack mix.

My favorite snack mix of all time, the wonderful, tasty, unique one served only in F -- found nowhere else on earth -- is now gone. Goodbye cranberries, canola oil, 7 grams of fat. Hello "Bagel chips ranch", "cheese corn stick", partially hydrogenated soybean oil, dextrose monohydrate, 8 grams of fat. Costco would be proud.

You can gripe all you want about lost upgrades and domestic partners. Nothing says "Braniff" like "Dehydrated Cheese Flavor."

God help America West.

How come everyone thinks those were cranberries yet knows the fat content? I was the other way, those were dried cherries according to the bag but I had no idea what the nutritional information was.

Actually I had a bag of the old stuff on Thursday and they were cranberries in that bag per the ingredients list. I made a point to check because of the cherry/cranberry debate :) And they are tart like cranberries. Not nearly sweet enough to be cherries. Maybe you got a special bag that said it :)

But yeah this was discussed earlier as noted.

No offense, but I hated (with a passion) those F snack mixes they used to give out. When I saw the FA with the black & gold bags being passed out on short hauls I used to specifically request "whatever coach was having." That has to be a first for a FTer, right?

Actually I had asked an F about the snacks one time and she said many F pax ask for "whatever coach is having". I personally liked the previous mix and do not like the new mix at all. I eat any good parts of it and toss the rest.

***** UPDATE *****

Just spoke with the King Nut people, makers of the Roasted Gold Mix.

Rep told me it was AWA's decision to change products, they rotate them periodically. The two products have the same price, but the RG bags were 3/4 oz while the new Costco cheese mix bag is a full oz, making the Gold 33% pricier.

She connected me with the voice mail of the president, Martin Kanan. I let him know how much several of us AWA elites will miss the Gold.

Mr. Kanan's assistant called back to say that he had spoken with the airline, and they plan to have the Gold mix back in six months. Yippee!! Apparently, the airline heard our complaints, and now they just have to use up their existing supply of the inferior mix.

For those of you who can't live that long without it, you can buy the mix company direct at www.kingnut.com. A 40-ounce bag is $6.95 plus UPS shipping. I ordered four bags, and shipping to CA was $11 (not cheap). Shelf life is 4-6 months.

Normally, it's par for anything I like to be discontinued. The assistant assured me there were no plans for that.

Actually I looked closer at the mix yesterday (phx-aus) and noticed the fat gm content to be 1 gm higher at 8 gms compared to the older mix.

New catering? Do you mean when they switched from hot pockets's last fall to either the chicken caesar or chicken pasta dish? One leaf lettuce salad. One brownie. Glassware...on good days??

If there is new F catering more recent then this than obviously I'm out of the loop

What routes would this meal be on? I've see the lasagna picture on the website for quite a while but my run is always Chicken Ceasar or Shrimp Pasta one way and Shrimp Salad and Chicken Pasta the other way. For breakfast it was actualy tasty with a bunch of fruit but I've only had that once.

Vegetable....not sure what I was smoking...yes, you are quite correct--tri colored cheese tortellini. It wasn't bad at all, but that awful bread stick has to go.

Considering what might be around the corner with US, I ask is their F product that bad? Do you get menu choices? Warm nuts like AA? Trust me, I'm much happier with HP's F product compared to 1 year ago. Back then it was always a tiny hotpocket, with a one or two leaf lettuce salad--absolutely awful.

Warm nuts were gone over 2 years ago! Honestly, US catering is SAD. It used to be on par with all the others, but somewhere in the middle of the first Ch11 trip, around fall of 2002, F service was cut dramatically, to around HP's current service level. It slowly deteriorated from there, to around the level of HP's HP (hehe) meals.

Now, transcon meals consist of In-flight cafe pre-packaged boxes. No joke. F passengers receive the exact same thing offered in Y for purchase, at no cost. No glassware, plates, nothing nothing nothing. The downgrade is blamed on a "catering transition," and we've been promised the change isn't permanent. But it's been the same since February of this year, so many have begun to accept that there will be no change at all. Pray to GOD that if this merger takes place, US adopts HP's food service practices, not the other way around.

On a lighter note, international flights still receive full service catering (on par with HP's domestic product). Flights to MEX and other Latin American and Carribean destinations have been noted as receiving standard catering. Also, Envoy class (international business) still has excellent offerings. Four-course meals, glassware, china, and 2 meal services on every transatlantic flight.

Pre-packaged boxes?? You've GOT to be kidding me. Here I am *****ing and moaning about HP's F product. Wow. Sorry to hear that. I guess it's all relative.

However, when you say international flights still receive catering "on par with HP's domestic product" I can assure there is no comparison in what US offers over HP--I'm sure it's absolutely superior to HP. Whether your flying to San Jose, Costa Rica or Minneapolis, get ready to enjoy your chix caesar or quad-color barilla :p

As GotCalcio4 described, US's domestic F service leaves a lot to be desired. While I have yet to experience the box lunches on my 75K+ preferred miles on US so far this year, I also haven't had a US F meal as tasty, fillng, or visually appealing as that lukewarm tortellini

I certainly hope that if this merger goes through, F service systemwide will become more like HPs with the addition of 2 things from US: the snack basket (complete with XOXOs :D ) and the wonderful Piedmont FAs...

LOL.

Ok, I think I may have been unclear originally. "International" means everywhere outside of the US. So flights to the Carribean, Latin America, and Mexico (which I was referring to as "international" flights) will typically receive a one-course light meal, hot if you're lucky.

"International," in reference to transatlantic, is completely different. Those are the flights that I meant still receive four-course meals with real linens, china, glassware, etc.

Domestic flights, if designated as "snack" flights, will receive either a fruit plate with croissant (breakfast) or a small sandwich with a salad (lunch/dinner/redeye). If designated as a "meal" flight, you get the nice boxed breakfast/lunch/dinner, depending on time of day.

Check out airlinemeals.net:
http://www.airlinemeals.net/indexMeals.html

Once there, make your way to the US Airways page.

Photo 088 is what to expect as a "meal" on a domestic or Canadian (including transcon) flight. Photo 068 is what to expect if you're on a "snack" designated lunch/dinner timeframe flight, photo 079 is what to expect if you're on a "snack" designated breakfast time flight.
Photo 087 is a pretty good representation of what to expect on a Mexico, Carribean, or Latin American flight.
Photos 072-078 are what to expect in Transatlantic Envoy class (as you can see, Envoy is like flying on a different airline).

Oh and Byrd, I like that! US happy meals :D I think you just coined a new phrase!

There are times when the only dish left is the pasta dish or I'm just pretty tired of the chicken ceasar salad that the "box" lunch would be welcomed on HP. Though I love the cobbler the meals really need a switch up once in a blue moon.

I agree. When I am busting back and forth a couple times/week, it does get to be tiring. I would prefer one of the boxed cheeseburgers for a change, but have to pay for it (which I do sometimes)
