Hello all, I'm looking for any input on a good tablet to get for a FFer. I would like something small and light, but I think I would want the keyboard and a DVD built it. Any ideas would be great! Thanks!

Have you seen the Averatec C3500? Way cool.

I've had my Toshiba Tablet PC for over 2 years now. I've always been a Toshiba fan for their durability. (I've had all other brands and been disappointed -- including Compaq whose display isn't great and Dell whose screws would somehow come off.)

However, my Toshiba doesn't have a built-in DVD player. It's an attachment.

Toshiba now offers three tablet PCs now the Tecra M4 (http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/cmod.to?seg=HHO&coid=-29325&sel=0&rcid=-26367&ccid=1291021) the Satelite R10/15 (http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/ebtext.to?page=tabletpcfam&ccid=1291021&seg=HHO&sel=1) and the Protege M200 (http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/cmod.to?seg=HHO&coid=-26373&sel=0&rcid=-26367&ccid=1291021)

The Protege is widely regarded to be the best convertible form tablet PC on the market now, though if you're looking for a "slate" model or a "hybrid" form like the one offered by HP they don't really offer anything like that quite yet. The Tecra M4 and Satelite R10/15 are both newly released products and rumor has it that a successor to the Protege M200 will be released sometime in early may as well.

You can find a nice review of the M200 here (http://www.tabletpcbuzz.com/features/article.asp?ID=21)

The question you need to ask yourself though, is: are you looking for an ultra light computer with limited functionality and tablet features or are you looking for a small laptop with tablet capabilities, or are you somewhere in between? That's really the deciding factor.

If the former is the case, then you should think about getting one of HP’s slate TC1100 (http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/tabletpc/) or a Sahara i213 (http://www.tabletpctalk.com/reviews/sahara_i213.shtml)

If you’re borderline I’d recommend the M200’s successor

And if you’re into more of the laptop as tablet PC side of the system then I’d shoot for a Satelite or Tectra.

Cheers,
- J.P.

I just found a review of the Satelite R15 (http://www.tabletpcreviewspot.com/default.asp?newsID=229) that might be useful as well

dspringer,

Based on your criteria, I recommend the Fujitsu T4000D series (http://store.shopfujitsu.com/fpc/Ecommerce/buildseriesbean.do?series=T4D&ptype=TB). It's small and light, about 4.4 lb (2 kg), has 12" xga or sxga+ display with outdoor viewable option, built in optical drive, and good battery life. Fujitsu is the company with most experience in making pen computers, having been making them for over 12 years.

I would suggest getting the Atheros SuperAG wireless LAN option instead of the Intel Pro Wireless and forego the Centrino branding. As a wireless engineer, I have found Atheros to have stronger signal, faster throughput, and just overall works better than Intel. Intel 2100B and 2200BG has numerous problems with disconnections, interoperability and driver stability issues in my lab tests.

Perhaps wait and see for 1-2 months until Toshiba unveils their new Protege tablet pc. If Toshiba decides to integrate an optical drive, it is another option that you can consider.

If a built-in optical drive is not crucial, then there are more options to choose from: the upcoming IBM X41 Tablet, Toshiba Protege M200 or HP TC4200.

If something larger (14" display, 6 lbs weight) is acceptable, then look to the Toshiba Tecra M4. No other competitor in that class can match up in terms of features and functionality.

Don't have a tablet TPC yet. Eagerly awaiting the IBM Thinkpad X41 tablet version.

Just wanted to comment on your preference for a built in DVD player. Now that I know how easy it is to make a virtualdrive (using free MDAEMON software http://www.daemon-tools.cc), I'd say get a tablet pc without a built in DVD or CD drive and you save yourself the weight.

Post back if you need the details.
