Didn't make the news, but I once had to return to SLC because a ground crew member didn't latch a cargo door properly. This was on a DL plane with rear-mounted engines (727?) a few years back. The door opened and got pulled back right against one engine, blocking its air intake. Engine goes out. Suction goes away, door releases its death-grip on the engine. Engine tries to restart and does. Suction returns, pulling the door hard against the engine again. Repeat. A lot.
Sounded like a bowling ball rolling around in the trunk of a car.
The first thing I noticed was that we weren't climbing as fast as we usually do. The next thing was that we were turning around much lower than any flight usually does. Then we were back on the ground before I had a chance to get worried. After that the pilot explained what had happened.
