I am hoping to get up to NYC sometimes this spring/summer to take in a play and maybe do some sight seeing. Looking for some low cost travel, maybe the train and a budget hotel for my wife and myself
Any suggestions?

Think you're probably posting in the wrong forum for this, but here are some cheap options:

$20 one-way, $35 round trip. Chinatown to Chinatown.
If you really want the lowest cost travel, then the Chinatown bus is your method of transportation: $35 roundtrip. It's not the best way to travel, but it's less than a quarter of what you'd spend on Amtrak (which would be $76+ each way):

I work in Chinatown in Washington, DC and signs for where the bus stops are non-existant. It seems to operate on the "you've got to know where to go" system. I can't tell you how many times I've been stopped by strangers asking where the Chinatown to Chinatown buses stop.
I would try to make sure you know before you get here.
Good luck.
Take the train. I do it about twice a year from BWI. It is a very relaxing way to travel. You don't have to worry about the hassles of flying and train travel is very flexible. You are right in the middle of Manhattan when you arrive and if you choose to stay a little longer on your departure day, you can always catch a later train.
With the senior citizen or AAA discount it is fairly reasonable. Try www.quikbook.com or priceline for a hotel.

For the Chinese bus, plug "Chinatown bus" into Google and you'll get all the info you'd ever want to know. Some links:
