Travel Technology - IBM Laptop issues

I received a "Loaner" IBM T42P about 1 1/2 weeks ago. I was about to send in my T41 to have it looked over and repaired. While trying to configure a printer for the T42P, the system lost power and shutdown. I had a charger connected to it so I know that low battery was not the cause of the powerdown. The charger is not recognized by the T42P and the laptop will not power up with the charger (battery inserted or not). It appears that this new computer (just out of the box) has sustained a major hardware failure. This computer has not been abused (dropped).
Is this an isolated instance of failure or is this common? I was wondering if other people have experienced issues like this.

Try removeing the charger, and removing the battery for 5 min.
Then reinstall the battery, let it sit for a min, and reinstall the charger.
See if that helps at all. I've had cases where the system board got confused by a flakey battery connection.

flyboy_421, thanks for the information. Now that I have some time, I will try this. I will report how things went.

IBM will tell you, when you call, to unplug charger and battery. Leave both out then press the power button 10 times. Then, plug in AC adapter (no battery), then power up. Make sure the cord from the wall to the adapter is firmly plugged in (as well as the plug to the back of the computer)

Yes, they did tell me that. What a waste of my time as the system never recovered. I am sure they knew this and wanted to brush me off. It appears that the system board has failed. What would have it took to tell me this in the first place and to suggest a field repair? I have been in the technical end of customer service for nearly 16 years and I can smell a brush off when I hear one. The customer service for IBM just keeps getting better and better. Good grief.
