South - Which area to stay in Houston?

Have a civil court case and I know the courthouse is downtown. Would it be better to stay there or at The Galleria? Which area is more pleasant/ safe etc.? How is the mass transit system in Houston?

I would not stay in the Galleria area if you have a court case downtown. Houston downtown have gone thru a big change and the area is safe. Just use common sense. They are plenty of nice hotels in the area including bars, resturants etc

Before, there was the Four Seasons, Hyatt and the single 'boutique' hotel, the traditional-styled Lancaster. Now there are many more options, from the big Hilton to some stylish boutique offerings - in the last few years a lot of new options have opened up, including the Sam Houston, Icon and Magnolia.

From a general business location standpoint, the Galleria area is best if your business is at one of the many office clusters along the 610 West Loop and beyond.

The public transit system here revolves around the bus. While they're all in great shape and the route system is pretty extensive, this city swears by the car. There's a lightrail system downtown that just runs north and south for like seven miles. You can check it out at http://www.ridemetro.org

There's plenty of great spots downtown. I moved here eight years ago and it was right before the downtown development boom....it's nothing like it was.
