JAL Mileage Bank - Just checked in online and have question

Hi,

So today I got a nice phone call from a woman at JAL saying that they changed my seat number for my flight from Fukuoka to Narita on Saturday (April 23rd) at 07:15. That was a bit of a shock to get the call but I don't mind the seat change (from 7d to 3d). I wonder why though?

Anyway this got me thinking about whether I could checkin online for my NRT to SFO flight that same day. And guess what? it worked. Yipee. There didn't seem to be any seats available so I just kept the seat i chose when I booked the ticket (21K). Besides what seat I'd like, the only other questions asked were what was my passport number and what country's passport it is. Quiet simple (if you forget the fact that it was all in Japanese). The only problem is that I can't checkin for my domestic flight at the moment.

Online checkin seems great but it does pose one question. What do I do with the baggage I have to checkin? Do I have to checkin again at the airport?

Joe

Hi joerules,

I just did FUK-NRT-ORD-FLL last weekend. JL will check your bags all the way through to SFO in this case, and even to your final destination if they codeshare with continuing carrier, and boarding passes for that as well, if applicable. You'll clear customs at SFO and then recheck bags with whatever domestic carrier, if you are continuing on.

Be sure to sit on the port (A,B) side of the plane if you want a looksie at Fuji-san. Unfortunately, during our shinkansen ride west from Tokyo, it was very overcast, and even foggy, so no view during that trip. We did however, get to see same on the FUK-NRT flight. Have fun....you'll love JL, compared to US domestic carriers of late. They are truly a class act!

If you arrive at FUK by 6:15 you should be fine timewise for checking in and clearing security. Taxi from the Hyatt Regency (which I don't recommend) was 2000 Yen, which the hotel arranged...it took about 15 mins.

A little Japanese on your part will go a long way with the JL crews!

Thanks for all your replies. This really seems to be the nicest forum I've ever come across :-)

I was looking at the flights (did some dummy reservation attempts) and saw that they are busy. I don't mind that so much. Japanese people seem to get on their flights on-time and quickly which is great.

I'm going to skip the Fuji-san view. I have a work party to go to tonight so I can't leave Nagasaki till the morning (maybe 4ish or so). So I think I'll get some sleep on the plane.I don't plan on getting as much sleep on NRT-SFO because I want to enjoy that experience :D

I certainly have noticed a big difference between asian carriers and european. I've never flown with an american carrier. When I went home to Ireland last year my JAL flights were really amazing. It was a big difference from flying to Japan with BA (who's service was good but in comparisson to JAL....). I've skipped studying Japanese today because I had no time. I have lots of time tomorrow so I can practise on the staff. lol.

Funny that LLZ mentions the Hyatt Regency. I'm staying at the Grand Hyatt when I get back to Fukuoka (despite their staff being slighly rude on other occasions).

Anyway, again thanks for all you help. You were wonderful,

Joe

I've used JAL's online check-in for international flights, and for the life of me I cannot figure out what the point is.

1. Even if you check in online, you still have to stop by the counter or a kiosk at the airport to actually get your boarding pass.

2. When you check in online, you cannot actually choose from all seats on the seat map. The web site actually blocks the majority of seats from online selection, leaving only the portion of the seat map that JAL makes available for pre-assignment anyway. So if you have your heart set on getting a particular seat that is blocked, you have to ask for it at the airport.

3. "But," you say, "checking in online lets me use the kiosks at Narita to get my boarding pass, which I couldn't do otherwise, right?" Wrong. You can use the kiosks at Narita regardless of whether you check in online AND even if you have a paper ticket!

4. "But," you add, "online check in lets me select seats a few days before the flight for my fare type which doesn't allow pre-assignment of seats. Right?" Wrong. Online check-in only works for e-tickets and fare types that would have allowed pre-assignment anyway.

So I am unable to think of a single benefit to checking in online as opposed to just going to the airport to check in.

Can someone help me out here???

Welcome back die-hard Guy ^

Figures!
But, It's not JAL's fault.(I mean,that's sort of sabotage/petit).
Presumably...Famous railway company connecting with North Korea
Be careful! Next target is ANA.

Q Shoe Guy,
You need some lessons,as follows
(Multi purpose words/Part 1)

マジで?(to the friend) /Ma-Ji-De?
マジかよ! (to the not friend) /Ma-Ji-Ka-Yo!

this means "You Sure?"

TR , you have lost me once again , is my 日本語 that bad ;) :D ?

Just "checked in online" for my NRT-PEK flight tomorrow, and thought I'd update this thread since JAL's OLCI is still, as Unimatrix One said, completely useless--at least for international flights.

I cannot for the life of me understand how this is supposed to help anyone.

Kiosk check-in earns you a few extra JMB miles. Not sure about OLCI.

I just checked in online again (I now know that there's no point, but wanted to see the seatmap), and noticed that it said you need to get your real boarding pass 60 minutes before the flight if you're in coach, or 45 minutes before if you're in Biz or First. Does anyone know if the 45mins applies to OneWorld Elites who can use the Biz checkin line?

I'm cutting it a little close tomorrow and while the 60 minute window shouldn't be a problem, it would be nice to know if I have an extra 15 minutes if I need them.

Thanks,

Alex
