Air New Zealand Air Points - meg

My husband and son leave tonight: SFO to AKl, business class (AX platinum). Is it more advantageous for them to use their UAL # for the Star Alliance miles , or to apply for the Air NZ #? Or would there be no difference? This is their first trip to NZ, and probably their last for quite awhile.
Thanks for any advice.
I have no experience with either program, but if they have collected any significant amount on MP with UA, and don't expect to fly NZ in the foreseeable future, I would recommend to use the UAL MP. Only the superfrequent flyers that are able to reach elite level in several *A FFPs simultaneously would start in a new program.

Welcome to FlyerTalk friedent;
This depends if they fly Business/First class on the * alliance alot. Keep in mind that you must fly NZ once every 12 months or pay NZ$20.
On a return trip to NZ in J they will each earn 600 airbucks in NZ program. So they will get NZ Silver status [Star Silver + complimentary upgrade on NZ LAX-LHR] and be on their way to 900 which is Gold status [Plenty more privileges there]
Credited to UA you can expect a mere 16k in miles.
