I'm planning a fun "day date" with a girl who really likes Greek food. Any recommendations for the Vancouver area? I'd appreciate any other restaurant tips too. Thanks!

If she likes calimari and you don't mind driving, there's a greek restaurant with superlative calimari but it's in Burnaby. Sfizi's or something like that. North side of Hastings Avenue in Burnaby (3 blocks into Burnaby).
Other than that, the usual haunts are the ones around West Broadway (about 3000-block +/- 3 blocks) which was the old heart of the ethnic Greek neighbourhood.

Vancouver is certainly blessed with delightful Greek restaurants!
I like Minoas Tarvena on 3823 Kingsway. Lovely atmosphere and the food is really good. Kalamata Greek Taverna on 478 Broadway West isn't too bad either. There's also Ramie's Greek Restaurant on 4287 Kingsway for simple & cheap fare.

I'll second this. The food is excellent at this little place. Service, not so much :)

I can't think of the name of the place right now but there's a place on Davie across from the Shopper's that has people lined up outside on a daily basis.

Wow, pretty old thread but handy topic.
I think the popular place on Davie that's being referred to is Stepho's. Haven't been there in over two years but when we went, it was pretty good. Didn't blow me away though so I don't understand the lineups.
I find Minoas "adequate"/good. We go there because it's close but it's not so good that it compels us to go regularly.
Hmm, going to have to try Sfinaki.

Go only because it's in the Entertainment book.
Hmm, going to have to try Sfinaki.
Also in the Entertainment book. :)

.
Why the lineups? Its cheap eats with good portion size. The taste isn't bad either but would not call them the "best" Greek in town. They do all the favs ok. There Greek Salad is very good.
My personal favorite is Tsolias. 2217 Hastings Street Vancouver.
The Roast Lamb is our personal favorite. Inexpensive and convienent for us but not necessarily a "date" place. Too tacky decorum and ambience.

There is another place within a block of the place on Davie street with the big lineups, on the same side of the street. The food costs about a dollar more per item. Better food and no lineups.

My fav has always been Pasperos, just west of Lonsdale, on Third... in North Van. Great outdoor patio.
A short walk up the hill from the Lonsdale Quay terminal.

I think that my favorite is Mad Greek in Richmond. There's a vancouver restaurant guide (http://www.virtualvancouver.com/restaurant2.html) which provides some other Greek restaurant listings along with their addresses.
I think Mad Greek in Richmond is on Westminster Hwy ( a few blocks from No. 3 Road ).

Hmm, going to have to try Sfinaki.
Finally got around to trying Sfinaki. I thought it was pretty good. Wife thought it was solid. Found it a tad pricey for what I was hoping to pay for a modest Greek meal. We didn't use an Entertainment coupon but if we did, I'd consider the pricing to be in the ballpark.
We ordered a calamari but forgot to ask if the fried or grilled was recommended. They ended up bringing us the fried. It was good but pretty standard with pieces of red onion and tzatziki for sauce. The portion was pretty large (we couldn't finish it).
Tangent: My buddy and I headed to Cactus Club after a Lions game this year and they had a really good calamari which was mixed with a couple of different peppers (instead of red onion) and another sauce along with tzatziki.
We actually had very good service. Friendly staff. Got our food pretty quick after ordering.
We're going to go back but only after grabbing a coupon first. :)

Since this thread from 2005 has been reawakened :), another new place that's pretty 'funky' that I can recommend is Piato in Kitsilano.
Definitely not your standard "Souvlaki and Moussaka" place, but the Greek food is delicious:
Piato Restaurant
1835 west 4th avenue
Vancouver

They specialize in "Greek Mezze" - Small sharing plates.

Place #1 is Stephos' and always has a line..frankly it's not that good if you're in the mood for good Greek. The other one is Takis and is just east of Stephos on the south side of Davie. Haven't been but I reckon word has gotten out as they're starting to attract a crowd of their own and often have long lines.

My partner went to Sfinaki for the 1st time in 2 years yesterday. She said the calamari (quality of the squid) wasn't as good as it used to be. Used to be nice squid parts of all different sizes - and both tubes and tentacles. Last night, it was only tubes of uniform size (frozen stuff?)

My fave is Apolonia @ Fir and 2nd - a bit off the beaten path but oh so good!!

I like Athene's on Broadway at Alma, which is one coupon after Sfinaki's in the Entertainment Book. Nice lamb done in a few different styles, good calamari, nice sharing platters. My co-workers and I stop by for big group lunches occasionally. Good Greek option on the west side!

Cross the Georgia Strait to Victoria and visit Pericles
on Yates St. Much, much better than Stefos.
Calamaris is the best I have found anywhere , roast lamb is outstanding but too much; other lamb dishes
are incredible. Have never had a meal there that was not great (after 20 years).
And friendly service.

Kalamata on W.Broadway consistently wins readers' choice awards in YVR publications, for what that's worth. I would not line-up for Stepho's. If you want to try it, go at lunch time.
