US Airways Dividend Miles (Pre-FlightFund Merger) - service fee for open jaw award bookings via phone

Does it seem right that US charges that stupid $5 fee to book an open jaw award ticket with a reservation agent? Let me elaborate - I say this because, there is *NO* way to do this online, even though the phone greeting and menu prompts repeatedly say that you can book online while I'm on hold for an agent (which was well under 5 minutes, thankfully)

When booking an open jaw ticket recently (fly A to B, then C back to A), the agent assessed the $5 government security fee and the airline $5 booking fee. I asked her to waive it because there was no way for me to book it online. She was very sympathetic and compassionate, but said there was nothing to be done. I asked to speak to a super, who repeated what she said. They were both professional and courteous, so I couldn't take it out on them. It's not their decision. But I asked if writing a letter or going higher up the chain would help and they said it's a common complaint, but people are not getting the fee waived. Just when I thought they've found every possible way to pi55 off their customers, they throw this zinger at me.

Were it not for the fact that US is the only airline to serve these city pairs nonstop, I would have thought twice. But I can't afford(time wise) the connections when taking a different airline. And, it's not like $5 is a big deal, anyway, but the whole principle of the matter really irks me. Just let us book the d@mn open jaw tickets online for Pete's sake!!

Is it me??!

No, it's not just you, but you should feel lucky it was only $5. I ended up paying $40 in fees to redeem "free" flights on Aloha using United miles - there is also no way to redeem them online.

Darn it--I didn't even know you could do open-jaw award tickets. :o

By the way, my mantra for soothing over my internal angst over any problems I have when flying on/dealing with US: "What did I expect?"

It has set me free...

Pay the $5 fee - I would think that $5 isn't going to break any one of us here.

The thing that would get me is the higher mileage that it costs to book awards via the phone.
