Hi

What are the chances of me being able to upgrade with one of those "day of travel" certs?

In other words, how do I increase my chances?

Thanks!

You have a much better chance with one of these (http://usairways.com/dividendmiles/programinfo/upgrades_mp_on_us.htm)

As you know, upgrades are subject to availability as they are on United. But, there are more important factors such as the type of aircraft operating the flight, the route, and the date. In general, your chances of upgrading with a "day of travel" certificate are good if you are flying on an Airbus A321 or B767 (US flies them back and forth betwen Charlotte and Philadelphia). All other US aircraft feature 8 - 16 seats in First Class so obviously your chances aren't as good.

...I should have clarified that I would be traveling to London and using a Transatantic space A cert. It expires Dec 2005 and is good on any paid ticket but can only be used 'day of'.

I can't use 500-miles upgrades can I?

Not officially anyway, and I would say practically 98% no. But you could always ask. I know internally US is pushing a domestic program for agts to sell upgradesMaybe you could strike up a deal to buy an intl upgrade, but I don't believe there is a formal program/procedure. But they need the cash, so try :). Ultimately it is between you and your gate agent what happens, regardless of t&c etc and thats not just a US thing but for any company. Ultimately what happens is between you and whatever employee you deal with of any company. There are a lot of day of departure intl upgrades done with various intl upgrade certs, so check your route day etc. FOr looking at fare class availability these days I use Expert Flyer (http://www.expertflyer.com) which is a paid service w/nominal monthly or annual fee.

500-mile upgrades???? US Airways went to "unlimited upgrades" for Preferred members a while ago. However, we were never able to use 500-milers to upgrade on transatlantic flights. Your best bet is to try to go to the US Airways Club on the day of departure, the agents there are usually very helpful when it comes to upgrades.

Thanks...

The code on the upgrade is Star Code: DS0087. Are these no good?
I'm just a little confused. I thought I presented them on the day of departure and got put on a list. I was just trying to figure out where I would go in the pecking order as far as being waitlisted. I have no status on US but do on UA.

Any ideas?

Yes DS0087 upgrades do work and allow you to upgrade from ANY purchased fare on the day of departure. In order to be able to help you, I need to know more details. When and where are you flying to? Try to get a flight operated by an A330, these airplanes have 41 Envoy Class seats (1 is reserved for crew rest) while the US Airways B767s have 23 seats in Envoy Class. Also, Envoy Class seats on the A330 are way nicer than those on the B767.

I had 3 people confimed using them on a sold-out post-xmas PHL-MAD flight. Based on a thread where people posted their success rates a couple months ago on FT, success is way above 50%. Obviously A330 are better than B767 for chances. The best advice though - check-in early. They aren't supposed to confirm them at the ticket counter but when you take the initiative of showing up 3 hours in advance when it's quieter, they often will clear you. Furthermore, you MUST call a day in advance to meal list. They will give you a PNR with the meals only in addition to your res. I put it on a post-it note on the cert. which I gave the agent while checking in.

Flew New Orleans-DCA nonstop last week. Am UA PremEx with no US status. The inbound aircraft was delayed an hour. The gate agent called my name and asked if I wanted to upgrade. I said sure. He asked if I had any coupons. I said no. He handed me a first class boarding card anyway. Mumbled something about the delay. I said thanks. Thought this was pretty nice, but wouldn't have given anything extra for it. Was surprised US really serves drinks in F in plastic cups. Can't recall ever sitting in F or C anywhere drinking with plastic!

I was planning on checking in online 24 hours before to get an early time stamp of check-in as well as placing a call to do a meal request. Someome told me that even if you do this, you start all over again re: waitlist when you get to the airport. But I am willing to try all that I can to get it done. This would include arriving at the airport when the desk opens to check in.
Does my status with UA do anything for me?

Thanks again!
