PRC gains in US Airways outsourcing

US Airways Group has signed outsourcing contracts with call-center operators Precision Response Corp. and Grupo Atento and to handle work employees had done in Winston-Salem and Pittsburgh.

PRC is to take frequent-flier calls from an office in Fort Lauderdale. The company is based in Plantation. An office in the Philippines is to handle US Airways reservations calls.

Spain-based Atento, which already had a contract to answer US Airways' lost baggage inquiries from El Salvador, is to also field reservation calls from that country and Mexico.

In turn, Virginia-based US Airways (OTC BB: UAIRQ) is closing its Pittsburgh call center and shifting some work from there to Winston-Salem. The carrier said it offered workers at both sites buy-out packages.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said about 70 percent of the 761 Pittsburgh workers took buyouts instead of transferring to North Carolina.

In March, before the package deadline, the Winston-Salem Journal reported 384 reservation employees in that city opted for the plan, leaving the airline with 466 employees at its call center there.

A spokeswoman for US Airways, which is operating under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, said the airline will have a final tally of jobs being outsourced next week. PRC has not yet issued an estimate of jobs it may add due to the new contract.
