Ever tried ZANKOU CHICKEN? Just realized they're opening a shop in West LA!! Whoo hooo! One of the most yummy chicken and that garlic sauce I've had. A whole chicken is like $7, comes with the garlic sauce and some pita bread.

The West LA shop will be on El Sepulveda and Santa Monica Blvd. Yum! Yum! (Great with white rice!)

Wow. Great news. I spend a lot of time in the Westwood area and it'll be nice not to have to trek over to Sunset Blvd. for some Zankou!

Definitely one of the best takeout food deals in Los Angeles, second in my mind only to the $4.16 #3 burger combo at In-N-Out. :)

This place is across from my gym and I walk past it most every day. I don't think they are open yet, but I'll give it a try when the do open.

Looks like it is ready to open. Table and chairs are set-up; everything seems in place. Drove by today and it appears that the only finishing touch is landscaping. Now, how is the restaurant different from Versaille.?Notable exception, being across from mine and Stimpy's gym.

how is the restaurant different from Versaille?

What's the same about Zankou & Versailles is that they both serve delicious and filling food at awesome prices! The chickens they serve are both great with rice! :)

Versailles is Cuban and Zankou is Armenian. Versailles leans towards the onions; Zankou towards the garlic. The sauce that the Versailles chicken is integrated with the chicken and the Zankou has this addicting garlic sauce.

If you're in West LA, you can try a Versailles on Venice Blvd corner Motor for lunch. (Lunch is like $1 or $2 cheaper than dinner, I think.) Then head to Zankou on Sepulveda for dinner (when they open). Then run all day the next day to burn off all the yummy food you just ate. :)

I ate at the Zankou in Glendale and I have to say, I was not impressed. The chicken was the highlight, but the falafel and shawerma weren't that good.

Anaheim is deceptively large. It's located in a part that is nowhere near Disneyland; really it's more Buena Park.

It's located in a rather large and unremarkable strip mall on Ball, near Magnolia.

The West LA Zankou opened yesterday. I heard it was quite crowded all day. Since it's across the street from both my gym and my office, I've been anxiously awaiting its opening for some time!

I walked to the gym today and saw it was open and crowded. After my workout I went in for a half-chicken. It was very good for a chain restaurant. Far better than KFC or any of the others. But still not as good as home cooking. I'll try some of the other dishes next time.

Do all Lax/based FT'rs belong to the same gym? So far, in this little thread, there are 3 of us

Tried Zankou last night. I was obviously in the minority as everyone was ordering the chicken. I ordered a tri-tip shawerma/beef wrap and a chicken wrap; buddy had the 1/2 chicken.

I thought the wraps were tremendous with the nod going to the beef wrap over the chicken wrap but not by much. Warm bread, tahini sauce, fresh chopped tomatoes and spicy meat. YUM!

Both my buddy and I thought the chicken was mediocre compared to the wraps.

Had lunch at Zankou after my workout today. Food was wonderful. Now, I feel like trying everything on the menu. Although there was a line, it moved quickly. Same valet parkers as at the Gym across the street. They prefer working Zankou because they get free food.

Don't order the Chicken Tarna if going on a date. Enough said about that. Several members of our family have weighed in on Zankou--here is the consensus: No garlic/paste stuff at lunch....wraps are good; especially, beef-one. Nice combo (if dining alone) is one chicken wrap and one beef wrap. This is nice, clean food. Welcome addition to West LA.

LOL! Definitely stay away from the garlic paste stuff if you plan on seeing other people for the rest of the day. I agree!

So I went to Zankou last night, after making my post. Being new and popular, they seem to be whipping up so much chicken that the batch I got were not up to par of what I've gotten from their Glendale, Van Nuys and Hollywood locations. Oh well, we still enjoyed it all. :)

Good point BellaG, that may be the reason for our below avg chicken experience compared to the other posters.

Had a hankering for Zankou tonight, so I stopped by the Pasadena location and discovered they are now offering Turkey Tarna, which I ordered in a wrap. It wasn't bad at all; a little dry compared to the chicken, but quite tasty. That garlic sauce makes everything taste good! ^

So, why did you order the turkey?

So, why did you order the turkey?

I was in a daring sort of mood, I guess; willing to try something new. Besides, I figured the turkey meat was leaner than the chicken and might have a little less calories. :)

While I agree that KOOKOoRoo used to be much better before Icahn got his slimey hands on it and merged it with another chain-fudruckers-the KKR in on Lake in Pasadena is not horrid.Just not as good as it used to be.
But I find myself going to Star Chicken if I need quick takeout for the staff.
Plus I get miles ^

and no one has mentioned California Chicken Cafe? I eat there at least twice a week, and I've got the timing down so I don't go at lunch and I avoid dinner rush hour. When it's crowded it's crowded, and it's too noisy and cluttered for the wife so I go solo. But the chicken and the salad are too good to avoid.

Another famous chicken place is Feast from the East, just up the street. Between those two places you're bound to see every UCLA sorority girl who's in town. FFTE does an amazing business in its Chinese chicken salads, they just crank them out, they also bottle and sell the dressing by itself. And they remodeled recently and it's quite swank.

I've been meaning to Zankou, but the parking and the seating look too crazy.

And no I can't afford to join that health club everyone else belongs to, I just go to the 24 Hour Fitness in the dungeon near Century City.

I went to Zankou on Saturday (so good), and parked on Bentley, one block east of Sepulveda. It's a residential street and had plenty of room, though I don't know what it's like during the week.

I've never had problems finding parking when I've gone to Zankou, though I always seem to visit in the evenings almost at close.

I'm gonna have to try it.. buddy of mine lives 3 minutes away from Zankou.

I like California Chicken Cafe, though I don't find their meals substantial enough for me (as an aside, I'm not a member of that gym :p)

Versailles is good, but I found IMO a better Cuban restaurant down on Sepulveda, just north of that model train store in Culver City. Name and cross street aren't coming to me at the moment.

I used to LOVE Koo Koo Roo, until they went with a roasted turkey breast instead of an actual turkey. I would always get the turkey leg combo. THAT was a meal.

I used to often get a turkey leg combo at Von's or Ralphs. Much cheaper than a restaurant and I could wolf it down at home while watching a game. That or a whole chicken. It used to be something like $4 at Von's. After a long workout at the Sports Club, I could eat an entire chicken quite easily.

Sorry to report some bad news :(
Just got some chicken (1/2 chicken plate)and a falafeal wrap-$15.00 !!!!
The chicken was more steamed than roasted-and they forgot the garlic sauce!
This was at the Pasadena(colorado blvd)store
I probably won't be back :td:

I've been underwhelmed the last couple times at Zankou too. When they're on, the chicken is unbeatable. However, both the Colorado and Sunset locations have been inconsistent lately. I used to eat there twice a month, but now its just every now and then.
