Great news. I'm surprised AirTran decided to go for RIC with their presence in nearby PHF, but anything that lowers fares in this notoriously expensive market is welcome!

I think that AirTran decided to follow-up where SouthWest promised to several years ago and never did.
Now AirTran fly's to every major region in that portion of the east coast corridor that I can think of (IAD, DCA, RIC, BWI, PHL, that one in Williamsburg).
PHF is Newport News & Williamsburg. Also, RIC says it needs access to the NY area and the top executive at Jet Blue (B6) told Gov Mark Warner that it wants to offer service from their before he leaves office in early '06. I'm guessing that B6 will go there or ORF (Norfolk).

PHF might be the best option for jetBlue. It's between ORF and RIC..allowing them to draw from both.

I doubt it. PHF is already dominated by AirTran while RIC still has a need for lower fares to markets AirTran doesn't conveniently serve via ATL or PHL (such as NYC)!
RIC-JFK on the E190s would be an excellent fit for JetBlue's first RIC route.

Great news. This should open up the RIC-NYC leisure market (lots of native NY'ers living down here, plus people wanting to visit Manhattan for the museums, shopping trips, etc) as well as provide more competitive fares for business travelers.
I'm hoping US and DL will match B6's fares, as they fly into LGA and offer far better frequent flyer perks.

Doesn't that defeat the purpose of having the low fare guy in town? If the low fare airline doesn't get the business, then they leave....like, let's see, AirTran to Philadelphia.

Yes, it does. You have frequent flyer miles but 1 year down the road your paying 2x-3x the price.
