America West FlightFund (Discontinued Program) - Wondering about procedure?

I have a flight LAX-MZT / MZT-LAX didn't know this was mesa. Booked at airport. I would like to bump as the dates I have are super sold and I don't wanna be on sardine flight with no upgrade. IF they bump one end will they reschedule second leg. Example MAY 4 LAX-MZT MAY 11 MZT-LAX would they bump LAX-PHX-MZT MAY 5 and then at same time allow me to move MAY 11 to MAY 12. Also would they refund or allow standby on maybe gonna purchase MAY 11 LAX-LAS MAY 12 LAS-SAN.

Question:

1. SEE Above bump to next dates

2. Should I buy refundable LAX-LAS-SAN ($88 compared to $200)

3. If anyone has orpaned AIRCHECKS PLUS coupons that would help make up my mind on the refundable part. Need 2.

Step 1: I know this is probably against company policy... but if you go to the airport (especially if inside security, usually this only works at PHX but you can try it at LAX) and go to the customer service counter, or simply find a non-frazzled gate agent, then: flash a smile, possibly your elite card [But in a non-pompous elite way :p ], talk, etc, ask if they could "Do you a favor?" and explain that something came up and you'd like to move it back a day, they are usually (95%+) more than willing to do so if space is available.

If you call up the HP FF number expect a note in your intinerary and a comment that it'll run you $100+difference in fares.

So, try it, you'll be suprised what can happen. I've done the above 5+ times, and it has worked for free changes in intins, plus sometimes a comp F upgrade on the spot instead of waiting for the next computerized auto-upgrade.

Step 2: Hand over A&B card. Although HP gate agents are some of the most friendly and accomodating I've met (at least in PHX and most out-stations) it cannot hurt to recognize them for assisting you in this case.
