MilesBuzz! - Flyer Talk is promoting selling your miles for cash!

Flyer Talk has a new revenue stream with these ads that pop up in each thread and some of these are for companies that want you to sell your miles for cash. Since Flyer talk is accepting money from these companies to run their ads, I can only assume that FT has no problem with the products / services that they are trying to sell.

I am thinking not!
However pop ups are a little bit of a annoyance, but FT is so full of great info I can deal with it.

I seariously doubt that FT is aware of this ad; the ads all come through an agency. Randy has set specific requirements for the ads, but the agency doesn't always comply. I sent a PM to him and Tim at WebFlyer so they can follow-up.

I'm with Tango on this one. If the FT moderators are going to shut down threads such as in Coupon Connection which request cash for miles, but then the board receives ads and revenue from companies that do the same thing, it appears to me to be a bit of hypocrisy. I'd prefer that if the ads be removed or not allowed, but if that's not possible the I suggest that if the ads stay as they are that we allow individual posts for the same thing.

My guess is that Google or whatever source delivers the ads gets more revenue from these sites than any other miles-related one, but is not aware of any ethical issues regarding sales of miles.

The miles for cash ads are the Google sponsored ads inbetween threads. It does raise an interesting question on FT's position on selling miles for the moment though.

My recollection of threads on this topic, which have previously been located in the ORP (Only Randy Peterson) forum, have been that Randy doesn't pick and choose his advertisers - rather, they are chosen by the agency (in this instance, Google) from their pool of ads, as a means to match those ads with the target audience.

I'm not convinced that the presence of these ads reflects a current acceptance or tolerance of selling miles on behalf of Randy or of FT as a whole.

. . . so if a tour company started to advertise sex tours to Thainland, people would not have a problem with it. . . . .[after all they would get miles on the flights flown to and from Thailand].

Pete, this is obviously a prickly subject. ;) My position is that if there is any way to stop ANY adds between the FT posts then that should be the course of action. As far as miles for sale ads, I think they clearly are contrary to the spirit as well as the letter of FT rules. Has someone made a conscious decision to accept them and, if so, is it possible to reverse that decision? Or is this somehow beyond the purview of FT decision-makers? I think we need more verified specifics on how the ads came to be.

Perhaps. But there is only one way to deny tolerance of the practise of selling miles, and that is to NOT have ads promoting the sales of said miles.

Correct...... the presence of these ads DOES NOT reflect a current acceptance or tolerance of selling miles on behalf of Randy or of FT as a whole. It is as simple as an ad that needs to be blocked by the network which is happening as I type.

I don't think anyone said (or implied) that. I know I certainly didn't. But the question of whether we approved of it or not wasn't the issue raised. The issue had to do with the FT organization as a whole (read: Randy).

My point was that this sort of thing has happened before on FT. The fact that it did happen never meant that it was tacitly approved by Randy or FT and, in fact, was blocked from the FT ad stream as quickly as possible (just as is being done this time).

The real point I was trying to make, though, is that just because the ad has popped up, it doesn't mean that Randy necessarily had anything to do with it.

I've had good luck stopping the adds by blocking certain sites at my router, specifically a.tribalfusion.com and cdn.tribalfusion.com. Works for me. :)

MilesBuzz is not really an appropriate forum to discuss Flyertalk's administrative operations. As we can see from Karen's posting, this is being addressed.

If you have any issues/comments over Flyertalk's operations, please use the "Randy Petersen" board or (if germane) the "Technical" board. I've also seen that Randy and his staff are quite responsive if you send them an email or PM.
