Does New York have a great Cuban restaurant? My client and I tried a westside establishment today and were underwhelmed.

Arcolaio99 took Mrs hiyo and me to Sophie's (http://www.menupages.com/restaurantdetails.asp?neighborhoodid=0&restaurantid=2316) in the Wall Street area last year. Unbelievable.
Do not be fooled by the simplicity of the physical plant, this is memorable food. Chuleta Empanezada w/rice and beans - $7.00. Order anything on the menu, you will not be sorry.

Asia de Cuba, as the name suggests, is more fusion than Cuban. But it has a pretty solid reputation (not that I've actually been).
I've been to both branches of Cafe Con Leche on the UWS, and was satisfied, but, like the OP, not overwhelmed.
newyorkmetro.com (the online arm of New York Magazine) lists 45 restaurants under the "Latin American" category, which includes Cuban and other Latin cuisines. Several earn a "Critic's Pick" designation, including:
Victor's Cafe (http://newyorkmetro.com/pages/details/2261.htm) on the west side of Midtown
Little Havana (http://newyorkmetro.com/pages/details/8497.htm) in the West Village
and
La Flor de Broadway (http://newyorkmetro.com/pages/details/2437.htm) in Harlem

Asia de Cuba was "hot" a few years ago. I think that is no longer the case. Some friends went last year and were very disappointed.
Sophies sounds very intereresting, will have to check that one out.

Alas, Zagat Online doesn't seem to cover Sophie's. I'll just have to try Sophie's and judge it for myself!
