I'm scheduled on LAX-AKL on 28 Jun for the late flight. The business seat map shows the regular row 7 and back. I really need to be on the earlier flight, but when checking out the map for that one, i noticed that it includes rows 1-3 and then 7. (obviously the previous first seats)
What does this mean?? (both in terms of reserving old first seats, and also about the config of my current flight, where 1-3 aren't shown)

Interesting that it only appears on NZ1 and not NZ5 [Although they are all always set as unavailable].

744 Seat Map (http://www.airnz.co.nz/travelinfo/ontheplane/seating/boeing_747400_popup.htm) According to the 744 seat map they have no rows between 4 - 6. I believe that after a certain time they are not selling first class so the new 744 seating can come on when they have enough aircraft to fly the route. That might explain why rows 1 - 3 are missing.

Not really. By 28 June it is unlikely that refurbished a/c will be on that route. Which means the old F seats are theoretically available for business class. I can understand rows 1-3 being greyed out as NZ presumably will want to allocate on priority basis, and may even have that section closed on some flights (as they currently do sometimes on the 747 services that have no F class). But it seems odd that sometimes rows 1-3 appear and sometimes not.

Maybe because NZ is going to be the first airline to have a re-vamp roll out exactly on schedule, they know which aircraft will ready byt which date, they know that none of those aircraft will go mechanical, their scheduling never has hiccups. Not odd at all ;) :p
