I'm helping my girlfriend transfer her apples music and pictures from her old ibook to new powerbook. I had hooked the 2 laptops up via firewire and found her files under Users>Name>Pictures>iphoto library>year>.... so I copied them over to the name laptop. Now I open iphoto and try to import them to her library and it gives me an error. When opening them via the Mac HD, it opens and views find, but get an error when trying to import them to iphoto. Any suggestions?
Also, i copied the mp3 over to itunes, now itunes says it is locked so i cannot even launch itunes.
Looks like i may have messed up big time!

Wish I brought in my copy of MacWorld...this month's OS X tricks describes something similar (can't find the current article online at their website). All they did was pretty much move the folder with the photos, rename it, and told iphoto where to import them from. There's also a rebuild feature in iphoto (and correcting permissions in the disk utility application). And make sure you're not using an older version of iphoto on the new computer.
And...as always...back up before mucking around. But since you can view the photo's, they have to be fine.
Worst case: visit/call and apple store and ask for the help desk (or call the 800#). It shouldn't be a big deal. Good luck!

One drastic way is to just restore the Powerbook from the DVD disc and follow the wizard that shows up when you first startup. It will automatically copy over the files, email, etc you select.
The usual steps to get the photos transfered is to just drag the entire photo folder onto the Powerbook. This will copy the Photo Library database file as well. When you open iPhoto, it should just read the database and update it as needed.

If you want to copy over your iTunes Library, copy over your iTunes directory (/home/<username>/iTunes/). Make sure you keep all the files intact, esp the iTunes.XML! Once you copy that entire directory over, you'll be rockin' and rolling. The same applies to iPhoto too, since it has the same directory structure.

For iphotos, I copied over the folders with the name 2005>... and 2004>... I didn't copy over the pictures directory. So it sounds like I may need to go back and recopy the pictures root directory? The other laptop is not with us now so will have to wait 2 weeks before we do that if there is no other way.
For itunes, I copied over her music from itunes music and renamed it itunes old music. The strange thing is that when i now open itunes, it says it is locked and i cannot even launch the application.
Is there anyway I can uninstall itunes and reinstall a downloaded one?

Copy over the entire iPhoto directory over and it'll all work. What's really nice, is if you keep captions for photo's, it'll keep that info and all of your albums.

To "Uninstall" iTunes, just go into the Applications directory, and drag iTunes over to trash, and re-install. You can download iTunes at http://www.apple.com/itunes

Thanks for the quick reply. I deleted itunes just as you said and then reinstalled but still got the same error. Any other suggestions?

You could move all of your data to your desktop, launch iTunes, then import the data back into iTunes and remove the copy that's on the desktop.

Thanks! It worked!!!
Now I have another question. The new ibook doesn't seem to have a Classic folder. Any idea how to create one so we can use software that requires it to run in the Classic mode?

The easiest thing to do was to use Setup Assistant, and transfer all the user settings (including iPhoto and iTunes) via Firewire Target Disk mode.
Also, if shehad a .Mac membership, she could've used the Backup program to burn everything to CD/DVD and transfer it that way.
OS9 should be included as one of the backup disks with her new PB. The Classic environment is not pre-installed on new Powerbooks.

bagold, you don't say what version of OSX you're using and whether the new PB will boot up in Classic (OS9) mode or not. In any case, two solutions: 1) OSX help has a good module on running in Classic and how to set up a Classic folder; and 2) most of the OSX books, such as Pogue's O'Reilly Missing Manual on Panther have good instructions on this. We found that out-of-the box, our iMac G5 running 10.3.5 went automatically to Classic mode whenever an application needing it was launched.

Thanks for your reply. She has version 10.3.7. We don't know how to boot up in classic mode. Do we have to press a button during boot up? I couldn't find the information on how to setup a classic folder from scratch in the OSX help. I better keep looking then.
In terms of automatically running it, when we put in a classic CD, it gives the error of no classic folder.

We upgraded to 10.3.7 and its help utility does tell how to create a Classic folder that you can even launch from the desktop. When I get home to my Mac set-up, I'll see if I can post the essentials and you can always consult the Apple Software site on the web -- it has pretty good info on Panther.

Do the brand new Powerbooks even have OS 9 installed, for Classic Mode? I bought a new one two years ago, and I'm almost sure I remember the salesperson telling me that the next group was only going to have OSX on them.

I think what they meant is that you can't have the machine boot directly into OS 9 at startup. What happens now is that you boot first into OS X and then you can have the option of using Classic (OS 9) to run an application if you need it.
As others have said, I thought it should be automatic... But I haven't used a Classic app in years. Try <http://www.apple.com/support>. It's a very extensive resource. Unlike other companies' support sites, you can actually find what you're looking for there.
If you still can't figure it out, schedule an appt with a Mac Genius at one of the Apple Retail stores. (it's free)
Also check the apple.com/retail (www.apple.com/retail) web site. There may be some seminars scheduled at your store that go over Mac basics. These can be extremely handy to get you (and your gf) going.

...Just noticed that you're a BA flyer. If you're in the UK and if you're near/in London, the Apple Retail Store on Regent St will be a terriffic resource for visiting qualified Mac Geniuses and for seminars. They have a theatre-style section of the stores with a rear-projection screen and probably 40-50 cushy movie theatre style seats for their seminars. Get there early if you want a seat. If it's anything like the SoHo store, the seminars will be standing room only.

Along the same lines..
Just picked up an Mac-mini, and it's in the same boat: It didn't come with OS9 preinstalled, but it does include an OS9 install disk, so you can run the emulation layer within OSX. (It won't boot off of it, though.)
It's probably the same situation: Just needs to be installed. it was explained in my owners manual, too.
