This is a strange situation and I am not sure how to handle it:

I have a reservation to stay at a Hampton Inn in Las Vegas for one night next week. This upcoming week in Las Vegas is one of the busiest weeks of the year with one of the larger conventions.

When I made my reservation 5 or 6 weeks ago, the only Hilton family hotel that was available was one of the hampton Inns. The only room available at this one (using regular online availability) was a smoking suite for $190. Obnoxious for a Hampton Inn, but then again there are few rooms available in Las Vegas all together.

Anyway, I was looking at my schedule for this upcoming week and go to print my confirmation on Hilton.com. I see Regular king room - $150. I know I didn't change my reservation! I call the Diamond special services line to find out if the reservation had been changed and they told me that the hotel changed the reservation!

Has this happened to anybody else? I find it odd at the very least and quite honestly, a bit violated. Why would I not have gotten a call from the hotel. Can they just bump somebody down without compensation or at least without a call?

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Thx ..PhxFlyGuy

Do you have a printout of your initial booking? If so, you should call and speak to the manager. You booked a certain product; they don't have the right to arbitrarily change it.

My anguish would be paying $150-$190 for a Hampton in the first place :p

It could be anything; maybe they intend to upgrade you and want to save you $50, who knows. I'd give them a call.

Why don't you check in, go up to your room, and see if you're willing to accept it. If it's not the type of room that you originally reserved, and you really want the type of room that you reserved, go back down to the front desk and ask for the correct room type. If they can't accommodate you, take them up on the Hampton Inn guarantee for a free night's stay.

Call the hotel and talk to the manager. You booked a suite and should get a suite. However, since the hotel now has a King at $150 - a reduced price from the agreed upon $190 - they have opened the door for negotiating. You may want to see how low you can get the King room for - look and see what it usually goes for and start there. This could end up as a blessing.

Is this the NAB conference you're referring to that's taking over LAS that week? I think somewhere, buried in the hotel booking terms and conditions, is a stipulation that they are within their rights to give you a room. Period. And, at the same rate or lower than you paid. So, it sounds like they had an overbooking situation with suites and you drew the short straw. Hopefully the manager can clear it up.
