I have two trips coming up where i will be leaving the airport before my connection in BKK.
The first one I will be leaving the airport for 5hrs and the second one will be a night stay before my connection.
So will I have to pay 500 bahts airport tax before both my connections?
Thanks all.

Yes, you will have to pay departure tax if you leave the transit area. You will not be allowed to return through emigration without a 500 THB receipt attached to your BP.
I did the same 4-5 hour transit outside the airport on my DPS-BKK-CPH flight on TG last summer. I had to pay when I went downtown BKK to pick up some stuff. However, speaking to the emigration officer on my way out of transit area (she could not understand that I was leaving the transit area when my connecting flight was 5 hours later) I got the impression that Thai Airways may be authorised to issue a pass that would allow you to re-enter without paying tax. Unfortunately, I didn't have the time to check that out.

Some help with this please:
I will be arriving BKK around 9:30 pm with a departure at 6:00 am the next morning. I want to stay in the airport and avoid departure tax. I am changing airlines as well. Is it possible to stay in the transit area, get my bags and check in to the next flight?
Thanks for any advice!

Someone else may know better but I doubt that you could collect your bags and stay in the transit area. The baggage hall is after passport control and I don't think there is any way to get back to the transit area without going into the main terminal building.
As I said, I've never tried this so I may be wrong! :D

If your stopover is less than 24 hours, you can have your bags checked-in to your final destination and stay in transit at BKK
if it is not TG from BKK you might have to wait until 2 0r 3 hours before departure to be able to be issued a boarding pass from BKK
I would recommend go aout get your bags sleep in a cheap real bed near the airport and check-in early the following morning

Your bags should easily checked to your final destination easily. In cases like this, i normally crash at the Louis Traverns Day rooms in Terminal 2. Avoids the hassels of customs, immigration and bangkok traffic.
And yes, if you exit immigration, there is no way you can get back without the THB 500 tax. I think there are some exceptions, but I have never found those rules.

The only exception to paying the 500 baht Passenger Service Charge is if you take a transit tour of the city. You have to come back through depature immigration accompanied by the transit tour guide in order to have the 500 baht charge waived.
